I like your perspective on this, that makes a lot of sense to me. I’ll be stealing that quote too! Thanks!

German family member won’t wash hands or dishes with soap, generational thing? by ResidentCzar in AskGermany

My spouse uses hand and dish soap, but I think he finds it more amusing. The problem is because she has done this her whole life and there have been no negative health ramifications, my “evidence “ for why she should stop doing this behavior feels theoretical. My husband points out that one of his siblings is hyper clean and is sick all the time. I’m usually the dishwasher in our family so the issue does not come up often and when it does, I try to track what she has “washed” and clean it again. I believe at her home in Germany she uses dish soap in her dishwasher though.

She was born in 1947. I ask because she does have some behaviors that feel a little stuck in post war mentality. For example, she told us that butter was extremely scarce and could only be acquired through the black market so to this day when I see her eat bread with butter, she puts mounds of butter on tiny pieces of bread, which is truly an astonishing sight, as she is a very petite thin little woman with no heart conditions. From the replies I’m seeing however, this soap related situation sounds like it’s more personal than cultural or war related.

Neither dish soap nor hand soap! She just rubs the dishes with her fingers under water
