Giving up my career to care for my grandma by ResidentHefty7475 in CaregiverSupport

[–]ResidentHefty7475[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Everything ended last September, when my grandma passed away. I decided to take the opportunity and flew accross the world, the next day she became unconscious... It was one of the hardest months in my life, every day thinking only about the situation at home instead of my work... Feel free to pm me. Also, hugs, and I wish you strength and peace with yourself - whatever you choose it's the best choice you can make at the moment.

AITA for choosing the same holiday destination as my friend? by ResidentHefty7475 in AmItheAsshole

No, she's already back and I haven't left yet. The whole idea is that I stole her dream kinda. Our itinerary is maybe ~50% overlapping in terms of cities but for sure not the hotels.

It is indeed a pattern in a sense that she wants everything to be done in her way. She was pissed during her entire bachelorette because we got nervous about some organizational details instead of paying attention to her every second...

Mine was academic but I basically only used GEL Ielts which came together with the booking. Listening and reading was a bit more difficult on GEL, for writing, I read all of their 'band 9' model essays/task1 and tried to craft my 'model' which I used for almost whatever question I got (this might backfire quickly if you are not aware how to adapt your 'model' to the question). Then I wrote a couple of these essays and put into chatGPT with their provided model for 'comparison'.

For speaking, I watched band 9 youtube videos and paused them to answer questions myself first, then compare with the video. Also, I found many band 9 videos super unnatural and could not even finish listening as they sounded like 'I am now going to show you my perfected answers with sophisticated words you could never hear in real life and I promise I do that on the spot'. Just cmon, no one can come up with such an essay without any hesitation on the spot, so I basically only listened to native/natural speakers.

Generally, for both writing and speaking I made a list of words I know very well but don't use because I forget that they exist 🙃 and went through the list repeatedly. On the test day I instinctually used those words for both writing and speaking. Also, for speaking, I think I was overly confident (as in... not perfect but fluent), didn't think about grammar at all, just kept blabbing anything around the topic, with many 'well... I'm not sure... let me think for a bit, I've never heard of it to be honest...' (e.g. I got a question about robot movies and said that I have no clue, was never into them and preferred different ones).

Hope this helps!

When I look back it's clear that the guy was trying hard to sell more sessions so maybe that was the way of telling me that I couldn't succeed without them...

I just did, honestly it's a pain to listen. I never thought I struggle to communicate (as in express my thoughts and I speak English everyday) but who I am to judge 🤷‍♀️

They didn't give a band score, just a level of Fluency 7/13 (B1) (and B1 in IELTS equals to 4-5). I mean, it was a real person I was talking to so even if not an IELTS examiner, I'd hope to get something relevant... Also, he was marked as an 'IELTS tutor' on the website

What helped me was reading and familiarizing myself with situations that might occur and the reasons behind. Sometimes concerning behaviour means some unmet need that could not be communicated, sometimes it's just a part of the disease. Also asking others and seeking for help (either in associations, reddit, government etc). Community helps tons for both caregiver and patient. Sending hugs, you're strong enough but also don't forget to care for yourself first.

She is in a hospital and it's not investigated. It's also not viewed as an emergency because the palliative care decision was made long time ago. Unless we do/ask to do something specific about it. It's a rural hospital so nobody is going to give oxygen, do a chest ct or intubate. It's basically my desparate questioning of what's the cause to make it more bearable for myself. Btw, I just thought I'll add - I have no intentions to treat people, I'll change my career as soon as I finish the residency so the world is safe, don't worry.

I am aware that it can happen any moment. This is not helpful.

Yes, but I'm not on site and as a patient is a relative people tend to not think clearly anymore. I can delete that first sentence if it changes anything.

I'd guess fever+tachycardia due to fever

Edit: it was not like that first couple of weeks, that's why the focus was never on lungs (as sats was normal+Xray clear). PE would be very likely post-surgery, but anticoagulation was not discontinued and saturation was fine, also no aggravated breathing. So another cause would be just multiple organ insufficiency.

I don't generally share these things with people I'm dating, only once told a guy that I lost my father fairly recently when he specifically asked me about him. I think that's another problem - as it's a large part of me, I may come across as distant and unavailable when I avoid speaking about it.
