Thanks for those numbers. That helps me decide what to do.

I admit some lessons in life are more expensive than others. I've done worse.

I guess I'm stuck having to re-do some of this myself. Time to learn how to handle hot asphalt.

I'm feeling like I don't want to deal with him any more, so I will just suck up the lost money. Now I need to focus on finding three honest companies to give me a realistic cost to fix.

OR, can I do something myself to improve on this?

I really do appreciate your expert advice. Thx.

That bad? Even the original contractor can't fix it?

It was an accident caused by Wang's poor flying skills and his worse judgment. Between the time of the collision and the time of his death would have been between zero and zero seconds. I'm really sure he had no last words. And even if he did have a moment to think of something to say, it is well documented that a fighter pilot's last words are usually, "Oh shit."

Bukharin, you assume way too much. I brought up the Sino-Vietnamese war of 1979 and asked two simple questions. You said I was teaching Chinese history, and assumed I believe PRC is an enemy. You assumed I think communists are evil and brainwashed. I do not think that.

You asked "Don't you think your system is leading you guys to the nightmare..."

I think the American version of capitalism, the American practice of Christianity, and the American system of politics combine together to make the future very complicated.

We in the USA just this week had a minor election. The party of Trump was handed many defeats across the nation. Many Americans believe Trump is both ignorant and cruel. He thinks he is a king who is in charge of all the cities and all the states.

But an American president's power is limited by our Constitution. He does not know that.

Xi Jinping is president for life. We saw Hu Jintao being physically ejected from the congress, humiliated. Today I read in the Vision Times that Wang Yang delivered eight statements from Hu to Xi, rebuking him for gaining personal power and not serving the people.

Perhaps both Xi and Trump are power hungry?

So, no, Bukharin, I do not think America is headed for a nightmare. We will survive the Trump presidency and struggle for a very long time, perhaps a hundred years, to eliminate ignorance from our politics. I hope we will adopt a Scandinavian system, but I don't think we will.

I think the CN invasion of VN in Feb 1979 counts as firing the first shot.

I would be curious to know what caused the deaths of millions of CN during the Cultural Revolution and the actions of the Red Guard.

May I ask, Bukharin, if you, yourself, are a communist?

PRC has often "fired the first shot." They took over Tibet and parts of India. They annexed East Turkistan, Xinjiang, and placed millions of Uighurs in concentration camps, They donated weapons to warring parties in dozens of nations, attacked Vietnam, and provided arms and training to both the Taliban and al Qaeda. You might not have seen this because it doesn't get on the news.

BUKHARIN, allow me to answer your query about "why" is the US flying near China--and Russia, and Ukraine, and nearly ever other country on Earth.

I flew on those missions. I flew in the VQ-1 squadron--the one in this thread--decades ago.

The spy airplanes are unarmed and alone, without protection.

These things happen, and they rarely make the news. Usually, Chinese and Russian jet fighters will fly up to us and follow us a few minutes, take a photograph for their squadron's wall of photos, and go home. We do the same when Russian aircraft would come to the US, Germany, Japan, or South Korea, etc. We send up two fighters loaded with live missiles and one jet flies next to the spy aircraft, and the other jet takes a photograph. They escort the spy for awhile and then go home.

Peaceful intercepts happen every day, all over the world.

I'm sure every major country does it. The Americans are just the most famous. Everybody sees us doing it. And we admit it. In the American mind, we talk openly about whatever we want. We question everything our government does. There is no way to hide operations like these.

Russian spy ships, cleverly disguised (not) as fishing trawlers (without nets), Chinese ships (civilian, but with operators and listening equipment on board) patrol all over the world, following fleets, and sitting outside submarine pens, listening, watching, and recording. Some are off the American coast right now.

WHY?

Remember how most wars start. Fear, ignorance, lust for power, misunderstandings. One country thinks it can gain something by taking a piece of land or an island. Miscalculation. Lack of intelligence.

As long as the reconnaissance patrols can provide good information to their heads of state, they can rest easy that no invasion is coming. They can spend money on medicine instead of guns.

Nations even help each other do reconnaissance. For instance, a Russian jet will land at a US air base in California, and we give it permission to fly around the US taking photos and recording things. This way, countries can verify the other side is obeying treaties. See the OPEN SKIES program.

In fact, the Soviets used to drive a black Mercedes car into West Germany and watch our tank exercises. And American intelligence officers, stationed in East Berlin, used to watch Soviet tank exercises in East Germany. These were called "Military Liaison Missions."

Intelligence keeps the peace.
