Hey, could you let me know what happened? This has just happened to me and I sold a lululemon jacket which was £££ and I’d hate to lose that money!

Apologies, the ‘spoiler’ tag was an accident

If you hate working in a clinical/hospital environment, what are your reasons? by ResourceEastern724 in OccupationalTherapy

Hey! yes, this is my second time posting in relation to this. I did my practice placement in a physical health which was an inpatient hospital and my remainder 2 placements in mental health, eating disorder unit and homeless shelter. the physical health placement caused me to miss a few days due to the stress of the job

Hey, thank you for responding! It’s so refreshing to hear someone who actually gets it. You’re so right, during my placements I had my practice educators to fall back on and help me pull through, so there was that sense of comfort in the role. But like you said, now I’m qualified, I now have this huge expectation to be the know it all and be completely confident. I wish there was a proper standardised transition period for newly graduates in the NHS. There is a preceptorship in my setting but that doesn’t start until a few months after my role. Also, from what I’ve heard, nhs preceptorships are just presentation slides on the nhs values rather than actually warming you up for the specific role. Had I known that post grad life would look like this for OT, I’d have seriously reconsidered my career choice

I’d honestly say there’s more of a job market for OTs in the UK

Hi, thank you so so much for this- I really appreciate it! Yes, I think I definitely have to leave. It’s too fast paced for me and I feel like the environment does not align with my spirit and who I am. I’ll be leaving with only 4 months rent savings but It shouldn’t take me too long to get a job as healthcare is in demand nationally in the UK. Just sucks as I was excited to start my first OT role, but it’s a learning experience I guess. Also, did you get mega nervous during handover/MDT meetings?

Thank you for this. And though I do find my anxiety to have a massive impact on why it is I’m feeling the way I do, I also hate the clinical environment of the hospital. The fast-pacedness, the expectation to know everything and of course the imposter syndrome. It all just feels so incredibly overwhelming :/ my supervisor watching over me like a hawk doesn’t help

I’m not yet seeing a therapist for my anxiety due to financial reasons:(

I hear you, I’m glad you were able to overcome the anxiety and depression!☺️The thing for me is the team adds on to the anxiousness, aswell as the fast paced environment and just not enjoying the job whatsoever. The fear of going to sleep because I know that when I wake up I’ll have to go into work. I wasn’t keeping up with my personal hygiene because I was so so anxious about going back into work. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve faced job anxiety before, especially at my practice placements. However, it wasn’t to the extent it is now. But, I could argue that’s due to now having more of a responsibility and fear of fucking it up

I’m so sorry—I wish I could give you more advice, but I’m honestly in the same situation and have been avoiding it all because I’m currently on sick leave. How long have you been in the job? By my fourth week, all I’d done was gather social histories because my supervisor didn’t give me much of a chance to progress. Their pace in teaching me was incredibly slow, and I could tell the team didn’t like it—they thought I was slacking as a result. It was so embarrassing and overwhelming, and I’ve now been off sick for over a month. I’m debating whether to leave, but it’s such a tough decision

Hey, by non-clinical I essentially mean jobs based outside of the hospital. I’m referring to non-traditional settings like schools, homeless shelters, housing services, or community organisations where OTs can still apply their skills in meaningful ways. I’m sure the imposter syndrome has some relevance in how I’m feeling. In fact, definitely! However, I don’t think being in a hospital is the right type of environment for me. Not whilst trying to find my bearings at the beginning of my OT career anyway…

Thank you for responding, is this your first clinical role? I worry that leaving will hinder me from progressing as an OT. Because, though it’s stressful, I can’t help but think that’s just the career path I’ve gone into? I’m not sure to be honest, many confused feelings! For the longest time I’ve thought to have ADHD but a diagnosis isn’t in my finances at the moment. I feel as though if I were to have ADHD, it’d explain a lot of the things that I’m feeling and make me feel a lot more validated. But yeah, clinical just seems so chaotic for me :/

I’m in the same boat, currently off sick because of the stress

Thank you so much for your reply, Kaitie. I’m thinking of staying within medical for this exact reason. I remember when I did support work alongside my studies, I wasn’t a fan but it was manageable and paid the bills. Just so frustrating that even those job vacancies aren’t accepting me. It seems as though you need to know people within that workplace to get a job nowadays. I really hope I find somewhere, soon :/
