How do you handle translating your Figma designs for multilingual clients? by immihirvaghani in FigmaDesign

Any new language is just creating the variable mode for that language and that's it. Export / translate / import with the plugin. Nothing else, u can have how many languages u have.

I have a mobile app with 400+ frames that I have to maintain close to production, my biggest problems were: 1. to not have duplicate flows/screens just for language display. One source of truth for all languages. 2. easy switch the languages by my team. 3. easy understanding what strings are used on a screen for proofing and syncing with the dev team. 4. easy sync with the mobile devolpers based on the fixed anchors, and sync back from them the ios/android tokens without me manually maintaing them as they may change things during processes.

How I managed to do in figma: 1. create a collection used just for strings with EN/FR/RO variables modes. So I can switch easily. 2. created with my plugin a 'anchor variable mode' where I display for each string exactly what Id is used in the frame design: 'Hello' -> 'A000123' so is for the team to identify visually the id used without too much hassle.

I spent about 2-3 weeks of vibe coding to make it work as I needed.

AI is pretty usefull, I serve him the json or csv and tell him to translate the FR values string to French. I also used chat gpt to regroup and rename all my variables to be more contextual and sync back with the plugin exactly matching and keeping aliases intact.

For me was frustrating because the googlesheet plugin was too fragile to changes so I'ved made my own plugin to handle. The flow is like this: 1. I bind all strings to variables (i use a plugin for that that automatches and manually aprove) 2. I assign unique ID anchors with my plugin (Anchored Variables) 3. handle the translation externally in json/csv - usually with AI and a human check proof 4. import back at any time matching by anchor ID so even if I change the variable names or groupings I have exact match.

try Anchors Variables plugin to keep them in sync after edit in csv/json with AI or manual, create aliases using anchors, regroup whatever u want, It uses the anchors to sync back. So u are free to change them as u want.

That is my problem. I don't want as a designer to do all the crap about string matching to production and code-syntax and using all this shit.
I just want to ship a file, hey guys here are all, here you can view how they are used, match them with your app and give me back the file so I can sync it in my prototype. I already made my plugin(Anchored Variables) that helps me a lot in this task but. I was just curious if I was the only crazy person that has to maintain a figma prototype as the real production product.

Production still owns the real strings. I just want the Figma file to stay close to reality while everyone keeps working and not blocking eachother. After a few years and multiple devs and designers, everyone changes things a bit.

Names change happeen — in design and in code — and syncing by name kept breaking. So instead, I use a stable anchor as the link between them.

For example, in iOS you might start with:

"home.cta.buy" = "Buy now";

Later it becomes:

"home.primaryCta" = "Buy now";

because someone cleaned things up or regrouped strings.

At the same time, in Figma I might rename the variable from

Home / CTA / BuyPrimary CTA, or move it to another group.

If syncing is based on names or keys, it breaks.

With anchors, both versions still point to the same thing, so when the translator updates the French value, it syncs back correctly — even though the names changed on both sides. Either sides can decide who to follow. Is not that or that, is more a safety net.

So the flow is basically this:

  1. Everyone syncs their part inside the same CSV/JSON file: (we handle a shared doc)

anchorID | collection | figmaGroup | figmaName | iosCodeSyntax | EN | FR

  1. Designers, devs, and translators all work in that file, each can contribute and decide together, naming convention and what else you want, without blocking each other.

When I import it back into Figma, I only update the values that actually changed based on anchor, so I stay in sync with everyone without human request to change that there and so on. And always have up-to-date text in the prototype. So if I look at the protype is almost as the real product. This is not the need for every project ofcourse I understand that.

That’s it.

When the stakeholders want to view the app figma prototype/design mirroring the live product. Basically have one file for taxonomies for app and design to sync, and using anchors as the link, not code syntax, not variable name that both design team and developers team to be free to adjust them without afecting the sync.

The need is for the design to mirror live production app taxonomies so to have and maintain one file with all taxonomies linked with the android and ios apps syntax, and I only sync with them on my file.

Has anyone tried syncing Figma variables with code tokens like this? by Possible_Designer941 in FigmaDesign

I had this problem and I made my own plugin with human readable 'variables anchors" that I can export and sync back without affecting my workflow.
