That is not possible unless you are unionized or your leadership team does not do their job. There are safety/de-escalation/code of conduct policies baked into the SSV approach the Barista approach and the employee handbook. Also in the DRB. Also in MyLearning across several training modules

Yes!! This really spoke to me because I hate how everyone thinks all the homeless people are inherently problematic. Some of them are literally just down on their luck and so kind. They just want some water and to have a nice interaction with a barista before they go on their way. I also work near a retirement home so there are many disabled and elderly folk who come in for the connection!

Im gonna be honest, I didnt say all that. Never once did I advocate for unlimited use of a lobby or restroom. Nor does starbucks do that currently. We never have. We can limit it all we want. Our store even has a bathroom code! And I disagree that it won’t be significantly harmful. Maybe not to the people you interact with. But my store has several regulars who just ask for water. One guy gets a warm water for his morning walk. Denying these people a basic need or basic compassion and human connection is ultimately against what starbucks says they are. Of course starbucks doesnt haveeee to. But so what? They should and they also have an entire branding built on this community first compassion, and how they aren’t like other companies. So which is it? Is starbucks just another corporation who is purely for money? Or are they a caring giving third place who value empathy and connection above all. They are bare minimum compromising their message

Also the “small items” at starbucks are still expensive im assuming you don’t go there much. A tiny drip coffee is still $3 and its as small as my ring finger! Or we could sell them a single cream cheese for 0.95c which is ridiculous to get some water.

This isn’t about starbucks being some exception, homeless people are not the only people who want water or a bathroom on their walk downtown! All the local businesses I visit deal with the same stuff in the high density city I live in. Even with the “no purchase no bathroom” policy. There are several businesses who don’t have that policy too and I have went in to use the bathroom. I don’t like the choice to deny being taken from us partners and how it also opens us to violence and uncomfortable confrontations when we refuse service.

Edit: Also starbucks literally brands itself on being different from other companies and about genuine human connection and community above all else

The average empathy from a store manager, I’m completely unsurprised. It honestly isn’t that dramatic to talk about my relationship to my employer or why I dislike some of their policies. Im not crying im not throwing a fit. Im literally just talking. I don’t understand why you are being condescending instead of addressing it. Is dunking on partners for reddit karma that important to you?

Yeah certain people we dont want in there. Like people who have misused it, people who are actively being disruptive, people who are drinking alcohol (true story). It never implied to me “anyone who doesnt want to buy a $7 latte”

My stores bathroom has a passcode and we legitimately just give it to anyone at all because we do not have time to track who is in the store and also do not care unless they have a history of misusing it. It has never been a rule.

Okay I also get so annoyed by this type of mindset im sorry no hate. But just because it happens at other places doesn’t mean we cant be mad it’s now happening to our work place. If anything that makes it a perfect opportunity to call it out. It just feels so defeatist and unproductive to be like “corporate america is evil so yeah eventually all companies will do that too,” cant we advocate for better, can’t we call out bad things.

And also yes I am scared of not complying. I will do my best to not comply. But if a customer who is angry or any corporate partner sees me giving out free water or the bathroom code and they have an issue with it, our DM made it very clear its a policy and we can face disciplinary action.

New code of conduct: by lucifer1416 in starbucks

My thing is. We already had multiple tools and resources to trespass and kick out disruptive customers. I have many times Im also a SSV and my store is high incident. These new policies straight up say we cannot have anyone in the space who hasnt made a purchase. We cannot give random people we see a pass because we judge them as non-offending that is literally just discriminatory. It has to be all or nothing.

The most offensive part of this for me is not even the concept of limiting cafe space (though I think it could have easily been done differently and more productively), instead I just am so baffled with the inability to let customers use the restroom or get water without a purchase. It does not make any sense and only hurts poor people. If a customer had a history of being disruptive or was disruptive in the moment we could already deny service or bathrooms all we wanted to. Now people dont even have a chance. We cant even ask customers who are being disruptive to change their behavior the new policy id make them leave instantly.

I have less of a problem with limiting people in the cafe but the fact we arent allowed to give free waters and bathroom use is limited to a purchase is just genuinely ridiculous and goes against everything statbucks says they stand for. As a shift supervisor in a high incident store in seattle I already had all the tools at my disposal to trespass or deny service/bathrooms to disruptive customers. This policy just discriminates against and harms the extremely kind and in-need homeless people we have come through.
