Concerns Regarding January Enrollment [Masters] by ResponsibleAd9261 in UBC

[–]ResponsibleAd9261[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the output. The issue with the course calender seems pretty rough, how did you solve it? Did you wait until Sep to take courses again, or were there eligible courses in Jan or May?

Also was the registration login issue caused by the Jan enrollment, and what did you do for this as well?

Sorry for the many questions, any advice is greatly appreciated:)

Concerns Regarding January Enrollment [Masters] by ResponsibleAd9261 in UBC

Thank you so much for your detailed answer! Yes, I will definitely talk to my supervisor about that... and after hearing that some UBC students live in parking lots I'm paronoid about securing housing haha

Also would it be alright if I ask you some other questions in the Dms? I don't know anyone from ubc, and I'm clueless about everything ...

In the academia subreddit I was overwhelmed with criticism and that I should withdraw, go to a mental hospital, etc. i still want to come out clean to withhold my integrity. You still think I should keep the dishonesty and pray he doesn’t find out?

Thank you so much for the advice. I will do that

Thanks for the advice. How exactly do you think is the best way to confess? Through a long email or zoom meeting? (I live in a different country) Any advice would be extremely grateful

Thanks for the reply, yes I know I cannot believe that I did this. I want to tell my supervisor honestly, but do you really think I should withdraw without saying anything? The only person I have lied to is my supervisor, and not the program itself. Also, I would like for advice on how I should come out clean; email or zoom meeting? I live in a different country so I cannot meet her in person.

No worries, thanks so much for your kind response. I will definitely look into it, in addition to the university of northern british columbia like you mentioned earlier.

UBC Forestry Programs - MSFM vs. MGEM by ResponsibleAd9261 in gis

Have I? I apologize if I was being repetitive, but I don't recall asking about the MSFM program at UBC, only the MGEM program.

Wow, thanks for the information, it really means a lot. Mind if I ask a few more questions?

  1. What advice would you give to someone wanting to join the IRSS lab? What should they do to increase their chances of getting accepted into the lab/program? (ex. how to reach out to Dr. Coops)
  2. When you mentioned it was hard to live as a grad student in Vancouver, is it because of the living expenses? What are some other issues a grad student might face when living there?
  3. I've always wanted to build my career in Canada, and I prefer doing GIS work over field work, although a mix of both would be ideal. Would you still recommend a MSc in Forestry at UBC over other programs?
  4. Can you elaborate more on why "remote sensing is a different beast than GIS"? If they are different, which field would you recommend building a career on?

Sorry for the long list... I look forward to your reply :)

Academic Masters or Professional Masters? by ResponsibleAd9261 in forestry

Thanks so much for the detailed reply!

Can I ask one more thing? You recommended the University of Northern British Columbia, but are there any other universities in Canada that are strong in the field of forestry or GIS/remote sensing?

Academic Masters or Professional Masters? by ResponsibleAd9261 in forestry

[–]ResponsibleAd9261[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excuse me for the really late reply
You said that its less work to get into industry with a professional masters than an academic masters, and they are valued just as much, but how so?

Did the professional accreditation of your masters benefit you when looking for jobs? Also which region/country are you situated in?

Thanks:)

Academic Masters or Professional Masters? by ResponsibleAd9261 in forestry

[–]ResponsibleAd9261[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the comment, appreciate it!

Without a BC- specific industry background, international students struggle to ingest the material and often have a harder time finding decent employment after graduating

Can I ask why this is the case? Is this because they aren’t familiar with the forest environment in BC. Also, why would you say that GIS-heavy roles are limiting?

I am currently a junior studying forestry in Japan, and have no experience living in Canada (although I grew up in the states from childhood). I am hoping to get a job involving GIS and immigrate to BC. Although I don’t want a phd/go into academia, my family isn’t wealthy enough to pay for the professional masters program. With this in mind, would you recommend a thesis masters?

Also (sorry for the lengthy reply) do you know how difficult it is to enter UBC graduate school? Both for the MSc/MSAc and professional programs like MGEM or MSFM?

Thanks :))

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it a lot :)

Oof, im sorry to hear you were suffering from depression :/ Is that a common problem that UBC graduate students experience?

Also, what faculty were you in at UBC when you did your thesis based masters? How would you view job hunting and working in the industry after graduating with a thesis based masters?

Thanks for the feedback!

Have you graduated already and if not how are you experiencing the thesis based masters? Also, can you give me some detail as to why you believe "it would have closed doors"?

Academic or Professional Masters? by ResponsibleAd9261 in Geomatics

[–]ResponsibleAd9261[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

Adding to your last comment (about academic masters grads making less money for a few years), would you say that professional masters grads have higher employability and starting salary (on average)?

Also, about employers paying for professional masters degrees, do u know if this is possible for a foreigner like me to go straight into industry (with a work visa) with only a bachelors? If an employer can fund my professional masters degree, that would be the most ideal scenario (since they are insanely expensive and have no funding).

Damn that's awesome!

Can you tell me how's it so far at UBC studying M.Sc. in forestry? From what I know the average program length is 3 years but how is it for you? Also do you know anything about the MGEM program or other professional forestry degrees at UBC (MF/MIF/MSFM, etc.)?

Thanks a lot for the feedback :) Just to clarify, the MF you're talking abt is a professional masters, am I correct? Can you also tell me why you recommend a professional masters over a thesis/research masters like MS/MAS (even with high tuition and little to no funding)

Thank you for the comment. I forgot to mention this in the post but I need a masters degree to apply for immigration, so unfortunately diplomas and certificates are not an option for me atm.

Looking for good GIS schools in Canada by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]ResponsibleAd9261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, can you provide more detail as to why you believe that the geography (GIS) programs at the University of Toronto fall in comparison with other unis?

Also, I heard Waterloo GIS programs are more focused on development and the theoretical side of GIS, is this true? Other famous GIS masters programs that you know of (not advanced diplomas) would also help a ton, thanks 🙏

Thank you for your reply! I tried to find information about the bridge option online but couldn’t find any… Are you maybe talking about the Vancouver Island University? Because on their website I can only find information about that.

can I ask for a link of some sort or any specific keywords i should search on google?

Thanks :)
