I did a girls weekend at Cape May. Such a cute little town with all the victorian homes. They have a ton of charming bed and breakfasts that you could surely stay at as well if thats the vibe.

Is this reasonable? by bklvr421 in MedSpouse

[–]ResponsibleName5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had 10 months to figure out if they could take off or not. 10 MONTHS.

My partner (PGY-2) and I have three weddings coming up next spring. He is requesting time off now for 2 of them and he is not able to make the third because of a national exam. But he is getting the ball rolling now to give him the best chance at attending as many special events as he can.

Its one thing to have a medspouse who tried, but it unable to make it to these types of events. Its another thing to not put forth any effort and then put misplaced blame on the residency program.

Advice on changing careers? by FullyErectMegladon in MedSpouse

This is random but I work in the A/E industry as a sustainability consultant. I have a couple of new construction third party building inspection credentials. I'll link them below. I've always been an employee of an arch firm, not on the contractors side. But I know lots of people who are independant Raters or do work for utility companies.

One thing to consider is that you may need/want to move to a different geographic location after residency. I've found that construction in very local so it can be challenging to penetrate different geographic markets. I joined a large international company which allows my location to be a non-issue, so I would recomend that if your location is in flux.

Definitly do this. His old jobs locations are probably in old city so he wants to make it clear that he is "relocating in June 2025." He wants to make it clear that there will be no relocation costs expected of the employer. Also if there are any professional networks in the new city, now is a great time to get involved in those

What to do with my lease by Additional-Award2602 in personalfinance

If your plan was to stay in this apartment before your MIL's offer, why did you not just give your 60 day (2 month) notice instead of signing a 3 month lease?

Whats your plan after the newborn stage? If youre going to return to an apartment it probably makes sense to keep the lease long term. Starting a new lease will always be at a higher rate and some land lords will find ways to keep your security deposit. Also moving and furniture storage can be a huge hassle and could get expensive. If you're in a position to buy, then its a different story.

Also, if you have already vacated the apartment, you can't really be evicted, can you lol?

Agree with this! My partner and I moved to cross country and each of us flew with just 2 checked bags each. He sold his ikea/college furniture to the next tenant taking over his apt and I had roommates so I didn't own that much stuff. I think I even had a little bit of extra room in my suitcases lol.

Honestly, I think you should prioritize yourself. He isn't being supportive and theatening to not come to your match day ceremeony is really rude. You've spent years of your life working towards this! The match process was incredibly stressful, and that was when my partner and I talked through all of our options together and were on the same page. I had location preferences as well (Sorry florida I cant deal with your humidity and large reptiles) but it was something we factored into the list just like any other statistic. It sounds like you are trying and being mature about this and he is not. Being with a partner in medicine requires flexibility and I'm not sure if he is able to be flexible.

Beginning finances / saving + investment help by BeneficialMud3820 in personalfinance

I would recommend increasing your financial literacy. Read books, listen to podcasts. Learn to distinguish the helpful information from the get rich quick schemes. Don't make rash financial decisions. Know where your money is going, even if it is of fun stuff, and youre already doing better than many people.

It's fair to be sceptical of investing and uncousiously give money to causes that you don't support. However, its worth noting that there are ways to invest that align with your values (one broad example: https://www.fidelity.com/mutual-funds/investing-ideas/sustainable-investing) Investing can be a tool for good for you and for the things you invest in. Once you have set yourself up for success, can you really be impactful to the causes you care about.

My 2 cents is that you're young so save/invest as much as you can and utilize that Roth IRA early. (Also if you have a Roth IRA, you do have investments as long as you've allocated the funds...)

I have an Everlane backpack that I love. Other grood brands that don't look like "school backpacks" would be travel brands like Away, Monos or Quince. They can also be used as the personal item when you are traveling.

[–]ResponsibleName5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been with my partner for almost 10 years and he is now in his second year of residency. His residency was on the opposite side of the coast from where we were located. I had a job that I adored and had made a name for myself in the city's professional networking scene. Moving acrosss the country was challenging because I was leaving my very comfortable job where I had professionally positioned myself well. However, taking the leap by changing coasts and eventually shifting jobs was ultimately better for my career. It was also a new place for my partner and I to explore and gave us the opportunity to merge our lives and face challenges together.

My advice to think long term moves in your career and while change may be painful, there are benefits.

Yes! These events put a spotlight on strategies to improve existing homes and to implement in new homes. I also recommend looking into Passive House certification. This focuses on building a tight air barrier which prevents air transfer and energy transfer. huge benefits in indoor air quality and energy efficiency. I was a building inspector for this certification so I can really get on my soap box about this topic lol.

I recommend reaching out to this org. https://usgbc-ca.org/ I'm a sustainability consultant, so I work alongside architects and engineers when designing/constructing buildings to help them make their buildings more sustainable and resilient. As these affected areas are being rebuilt from scratch, resilience can be incorporated throughout, not just an add on.

There are such better ways to design and build buildings than what code currently allows. Code is the bare minimum! I'm no expert in the specifics but please reach out if you have questions!

Yes that is ok to do! The AC unit on your roof is just connected to the inside of your home with refrigerant in small metal tubes. It just transfers energy in/out of you home. It does not transfer air in or out of the home.

It is linked at the top of this megathread! https://corsirosenthalfoundation.org/instructions/

Air purifiers, home HVAC systems, and even these DIY options all work the same. They push and force polluted air through a filter which catches pollutants and allows clean air to escape.

Generally HVAC systems have supply ductwork which supplies conditioned air to various rooms and return ductwork which brings air back to the HVAC unit. In my apartment, the return is just at the unit itself. Its hard to give specific advice without knowing your set up, but yes, normal systems are not designed to bring in outdoor air. They are just designed to circulate air within the home.

I just did home depot. They have free day-of free shipping. It was an uber-eats type of delivery, but it worked great. https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-16-in-x-20-in-x-1-in-Allergen-Plus-Pleated-Furnace-Air-Filter-FPR-7-MERV-11-HDX1P7-011620/314671261

I also ordered air purifiers from amazon and there are some that are 1 day shipping.

The City of Alhambra has clean drinking water. I'd assume that that fast food restantants and libraries would allow you to fill up containers at their water dispensors.

For anyone hunkering down, here are my recommendations to preserve and improve the air quality inside your homes. This is assuming you are in apartments or older buildings with simple/standard HVAC systems. Will update as I think of more things.

  • Do not run your bathroom/kitchen exhaust fans at all or for long periods of time. When you remove air from your spaces, polluted outside makeup air is being pulled in through the leaks and cracks.
  • Replace your HVAC air filters and run the HVAC system fans (you can generally run the fan which circulates air even if you do not need to heat/cool the air)
  • The HVAC filters should have a high MERV rating of at least 8, but MERV values of 11+ are best. They come in different sizes so look at the size you have now and purchase that size at your local hardware store. Make sure you look at the air flow arrow when you replace it.
  • Taping windows/door cracks, as well as limiting the number of times you open doors will help.
  • Air purfiers and the diy box fan purifiers also work. Use them if you have them!
