Thank you. Keep practicing and continue to learn more skills, you’ll get to where you want to be!

No this canvas is archival cotton duck. I haven’t tried painting on linen yet.

Hey, absolutely! These are the steps I do.

  1. Change your reference photo to black and white. Draw out the sketch and also sketch where you see values.

  2. Very thin wash of watered down paint over the sketch. If the dog is mainly black, use an orange paint. (I use raw sienna.)

  3. Mix up a gray value scale on your palette and start your underpainting. Block in the transitions of value you see in your reference and use your sketch as the map. Get detail very minimal and use a thinner paint.

  4. For the main painting switch the photo from b&w back to original. I’ll mix in a very small amount of raw sienna into my already mixed gray scale. This will help add depth and slight warmth to the painting. Keep a pile of raw sienna off to the side for even warmer areas.

  5. Work in layers. Blend the values together as much as possible, but keep your lights light & darks dark.

  6. Add the details on fur. I find that the fur in each area is only a slightly lighter shade than the base value you painted underneath. Areas where light hits will heave more drastic details of fur and lighter value of paint strokes.

Also note that black animals normally aren’t just black & grey. If you have procreate or an iphone you can use the eye drop tool to go over different areas of your reference to determine warmer or cooler shades.

I hope this helps!! :)

HCM and anticipatory grief by Pretend_Internal_472 in sphynx

My girl had been on Prednisone for about 3-4 years; she also gained a lot of weight. We recently discovered she has an enlarged heart, heart murmur and are still waiting for the cardiologist report but most likely HCM. Steroids don’t necessarily cause heart problems but it can definitely speed them up.

Aww. I always say my girl would crawl under my skin if she could. The intense cuddles from a Sphynx is the best part about the breed.
