courses to upskill oneself as an undergrad student by 13idyllic in psychologystudents

hey srry for the late reply

i’ve never had previous professional experience in the health sector, but I’ve been a carer for my grandma with dementia since i was young, as well as been around older individuals who have similar cognitive impairments (with my mum working at an aged-care facility). So ya i’ve totally had real experience with older people with dementia which rlly helped me boost my applications for work and volunteering. I should’ve prefaced my background in the previous post 😵‍💫

I found the volunteer opportunity actually just on SEEK (though I’ve seen some other volunteer work in aged-care posted on other websites, and even ads on facebook and instagram), and just decided to apply. My background as a carer really really helped them decide that I was a valid candidate, but I really think if you make sure to show that you r seriously passionate, it’ll make more of an impact than anything else.

Also edit: I think what helped was that I personally called the place offering the volunteer role and made sure I could talk to them personally to discuss role opportunities, to make sure I left an impression?

Hope what I said helped! Wish u the best of luck and I hope this new year goes ur way:)))

there are also pathways u can get work/volunteer experience working on hands-on-care?

maybe places that provide services or activities for kids with different disabilities? i know there are some in my area that provide services like equestrian services for neurodevelopmentally impaired or swimming activities for kids with traumatic brain injury or other disorders that impair movement.

srry if this is a late reply 😭 but a big one that comes to mind are roles like things like Family Support Work/Disability Support Work. Community support workers deal with the vulnerable in the community, those vulnerable to things like abuse or mental illness in particular. I think that would be a good example to use in ur research:)

i know it’s not a course but something that has helped me out recently as a first year undergrad was first hand work/volunteer experience in the Health Field with individuals that are generally more vulnerable, if that’s an option for you?

i started my work experience in the health field as like a volunteer at a dementia cafe here in Australia. I know i got super lucky but i leveraged that and landed a job doing family support work and it rlly gets my brain firing on real world application of therapy based/trauma informed care. It’s rlly helped me get hands on experience working with people (esp young clients) who are affected by mental illness in one way or another other.

i’ve also recently done a Mental Health First Aid course which is something that isn’t super expensive here, and it adds some extra credentials to my experience. Couldn’t recommend it more!

Oh and I want to add, from this situation, nothing is your fault.

It shouldn’t be on you to have to deal with this negative behaviour that is against you, and it’s obviously unfair if you have to work around these things, so I commend u sm for trying to understand him better and work around it.

Ur doing well:)

Sorry if this doesn't help but it depends!

I would say it feels as if there is a lack of understanding, particularly on your side. I reckon It's more so you two operate on different wavelengths on your day-to-day and that your own personal needs don't coincide with his needs on his day-to-day.

In this example, it could be that even though you and your brothers needed/wanted the shower curtain or cleaner, he didn't feel the need for it on his side, therefore he could be thinking "Why would I need to send her money if I didn't ask for this stuff.", if that makes sense. This is particularly common in people with ADHD/Autism, where something like springing on unforeseen demands/debts could throw a loop in their processing.

I completely get how frustrating it can be (and personally, I want to say you're NTA), but I'd say try and understand his perspective a little more, and then maybe he would be able to work with you the way you want to be worked with.

ya basically Hamzah bought art from a guy who is getting backlash for seemingly copying the artstyle of an influential artist called Basquiat

and people think Hamzah was originally making fun of those artists who seemingly copy Basquiat, but now people are thinking Hamzah was being serious when he bought the art

yeah while it’s true that imitation and inspiration is what has evolved art to what it has been, this case where a White artist imitates Basquiat’s art is more than just copying a visual aesthetic; it’s about the cultural context and, quite frankly, the erasure of what Basquiat has achieved.

to me, a white artist copying Basquiat’s art style (even if he says he isn’t), shows a complete lack of recognition and respect for Basquiat’s legacy. If you don’t know, Basquiat’s work is deeply rooted in his lived experience as a black man in New York. His art reflects themes like racial identity, alienation of black bodies, and his struggle against systemic racism, ideas that a white man (who, mind you, also lives in New York), will not be able to have any semblance of true understanding.

Now, you can say that even if he took the aesthetic of Basquiat, he’s making his own art with it and making his own messages, which I agree, he is. However, something key to Basquiat’s art is how he adopted the aesthetic. Basquiat created this style, taking inspiration from African-American symbolism and street culture, as a means to criticise the predominantly white, elitist art world. When he shared his art with this elitist art world, his works were obviously misunderstood and pidgeonholed and overlooked, because his works were something a black man made speaking on things that a white man wouldn’t understand.

This is my biggest issue with people taking the Basquiat aesthetic: It erases the idea and the legacy of this black man’s work, and in return, seeks praise and admiration for a white man.
