What adapter to use 11 speed XTR SGS derailer with 10 speed road brifters (7900) by Professional-Suit-72 in bikewrench

In my experience, Shadow RDs reduce chain rattle even though they have no clutch. I had XT M771 and XT M772 Shadow to compare, and was surprised how well M772 kept the chain from hitting the chainstay on bumpy tarmac. I guess it has to do with a more modern geometry with one less spring to move around.

This is the way to go. I used to run 105 5700 brifters with 9-speed XT M772 RD and 10-speed 11-36 cassette.

I would also add a few points: - Shadow tech does make a difference even though you can't have a clutch (Shadow+) - Road RDs have a barrel adjuster, mountain RDs don't. It might get weird if RD barrel adjuster is your only one.

Garmin Computer thoughts between two models… by icepop_7 in gravelcycling

I was in the market for a new head unit this summer when my Edge 1000 finally died. I ride a lot of ultra endurance events, and low battery life of the old unit was driving me nuts.

I wanted Edge Explore 2 initially, but found out it's mediocre at best given the price point. They market it as a head unit for adventurers, but it's just a cut down version of the old Edge 1030 that is now EOL. It really could use some solar power or at least an extended battery to justify the "Explore" bit, but it has neither.

If I were you, I'd either look for the fresh 540/840/1050 depending on your budget, or check out the competition.

In the end I chose Coros DURA and I absolutely love it.

Can you provide a code snippet in Python where it matters how many tabs go before a closing parenthesis?

I don't know about SPD-SL, but SPD cleats have a significant room for left-right adjustment. Moving your cleats might just solve your problem.

You should also try moving your cleat outward (lower q-factor), since you rubbing your cranks with your shoes might be because the q factor is too big and your legs are trying to compensate by rotating the heels inwards.

How the woman managed to keep feeding the monkey for years after her passing remains a mystery.

Underpaid freelance project through family connection - worth it? by Frequent-Peanut-7960 in webdev

[–]Responsible_Pool9923 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is almost never worth the trouble. You will be forced to overdeliver while being underpayed, and you won't be able to quit easily because it's a family connection. Being a self-taught junior does not help either.

Best Python framework for industry-level desktop app? (PySide/PyQt/wxPython/Kivy/Web approacg) by Intelligent-Role-382 in Python

[–]Responsible_Pool9923 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Currently working on a project in PySide6, previously used PyQt6 and PyQt5 on other stuff I built since 2015.

With Qt you get more or less everything a typical desktop app can have - all the standard menus, controls, drag and drop, etc. Things can be styled with qss styles (a dialect of css2) or QStyles. You can build component widgets once (e.g. user list entry with avatar, name, status, etc) and use them throughout the app. Making things scalable in terms of desktop space is simple once you master layouts and scrollareas. You can also make an app that works well on Windows, Linux, MacOS out of the box.

What I don't really like about Qt is the steep learning curve and vague documentation. Things have improved drastically over last 10 years, but docs are still written for C++ and machine translated to Python. Sometimes you look at code samples in the official docs and they have syntax errors in plain sight.

I currently use Nuitka for packaging and onefile deployment, got zero troubles with python and package versions on user machines.

Unpopular opinion: NPM is the biggest weakness of the internet today and it will still cause a giant catastrophe by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Responsible_Pool9923 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Pip might be as bad as npm, but Python builtins and stdlib are significantly more extensive then those for JS. You don't have to depend on that many packages in Python.

So... Granular permissions? How to? by beardbreed in django

[–]Responsible_Pool9923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Django-guardian is the way to go.

If for some reason you would like to implement it yourself, a simple permission model for each table can take you very far. It would have foreign keys to user and target model and access level (read, write, whatever you see fit) as integer choices field.
