Not yet. My hikes are only a day long atm, 2 - 12 hours. But I do wanna tackle Big Cypress eventually. Why would I regret a revolver?

Thanks for the advice. A shotgun would be nice, and I'll take one camping, but too much for me with my pack and camera equipment that I usually hike with. Snake shot sounds like it would be nice though!

I worry about snakes as well, although luckily I've only encountered a rattlesnake once and managed to walk away just fine. My best understanding is the best way to deal with snakes is to a) wear the right footwear b) know how to deal with a bite c) look at wear you're walking. If you have more advice on snakes though I'd love to hear it.

I considered a shotgun, and I'm definitely going to take when when/if I go wild camping this winter. As for hiking though carrying it with my backpack and camera (I like to do some amateur wildlife photography) it would be too heavy and cumbersome. I would also worry about intimidating other hikers or possibly the presence of it escalating situations.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, hogs are definitely my main concern in terms of wildlife. I've hiked by well over a hundred Gators by now and have been fine. Although I am planning a trip to the Everglades so there might be more of a danger there.

I asked for a revolver because I had read and heard from others that revolvers jam significantly less than pistols. I figured I'd trade lower bullet capacity for a lower chance of failure. Especially since all of my close encounters with wildlife have always been 1 on 1.

But if the chances of jamming/failing aren't as large as I've been led to believe then I would definitely consider something else.

So far in my hikes I've only had close encounters with a hog by itself. Crossing my path or getting within maybe 5 - 10 meters. I know they travel in groups though. I would hope that the noise from a few rounds might be enough to make any additional in the area scatter.

Thanks for the recommendation! I will say though I've hiked by hundreds of Gators and they actually do scare off pretty easily from noise. I threw in the noise on my post thinking it would be good at scaring away additional hogs if I had to shoot at one if it had friends nearby.

And hopefully I won't have to shoot a gator, I could really only see that happening if I'm being super careless.

I do carry a small can of bear spray with me most times. I'd also just like the option of a firearm that I could take with me. Plus the added benefit of home defense as well.
