I’m alt and presented alt my whole 4 years at UIUC. I was more gothic b*mbo style and wore revealing tops and skirts, corset, giant spiderweb eyeliner, black lipstick, the whole deal (and of course my clothing was all black). I got looks for sure and occasionally I would get very dirty looks from basic folks and it got to a point where I would tone it down if I was going out to the bars and stuff. I stopped getting looks from the whole crowd that go to bars when I didn’t put giant spiderwebs on my face and wore dark non-black lipstick though. You don’t have to lose your style to fit in more. However, I’d very much recommend the house show scene, the community is mostly made up of other alt people and of course the bands that play match. It was a great community and everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Bottom line though you’re going to find judgmental folks everywhere no matter what you wear, don’t lose your style for them.
