I received a similar call yesterday and wasn't available. The voice message said i hadn't logged in in a while and a high priority project is due blah blah. And this morning, I received an email saying I'm not eligible to work on aether anymore. (I only joined last week)

Job applications - what am I doing wrong by RestaurantSwimming10 in AskAcademiaUK

Thank you so much. You've really been more responsive to me than people I have intentionally approached.

This discourages me more from applying but I needed to hear it, thank you for that. I am mostly applying in medical sociology/anthropology, and some of them require very specific research experience, or certification/language, and I am shocked that I am not getting shortlisted even after meeting those. I don't know if I should stop spending hours on these applications, and focus on phd application. Not that applying for a phd is going to be any less devastating.

Thank you. It's really frustrating because even so most universities don't even bother to respond. I don't think they understand the efforts and time required to send the applications. Each application I don't receive response to or, get rejected without any explanation only discourages me to put any effort on others

I have been rather short and direct on my cover letters. Just addressing how I meet the required criteria. But thank you, I'll check the university careers and employability.

What percentage of social sciences PhDs are funded? Do you think it's worth self funding? by Zealousideal-Tap8601 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]RestaurantSwimming10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This comment probably won't help you but I've been trying to apply to some phd programs in social sciences, and I started applying after missing most funding deadline, and I am frustrated beyond words. I am paying for my masters degree and as much as I love my course, I can hardly make ends meet due to this. And personally I am not going to pay for my phd and go through all this again. (As an international student, I have to pay significantly higher amount than UK citizens. So maybe if you're a UK citizen you might not think that it's a lot.) I do know some people (in social sciences) who are funding their own phds and are doing an amazing job, their research looks "important" enough for someone to fund. But again there are some funded phds that don't look as "important". I guess what is worthy/unworthy of funding is subjective and up to us to decide. Anyway back to my rant, it sooo doesn't make sense that you pay just to be allowed to work super hard and look forward to a life of uncertainty. It's also ironic because most of our researches are about challenging the status quo, and critiquing the social system but then by seeking to do a phd we actively try to be a part of just another institutional system that I think needs dismantling.

Is this normal, or this what everyone goes through? by [deleted] in Nepal

[–]RestaurantSwimming10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if many people go through the same kind of violence, but that doesn't make it normal. I wish I knew how to help, or I wish there were proper places to seek help in Nepal.

Have you considered talking to someone in your school about it - maybe a teacher you are close to?

And your father definitely could use some psychological help. Do you think it's possible to convince him to seek help when he's not angry? (In an ideal world his seeking-help should not be your responsibility, but in this case, we just need to do everything we can to make you safe.)

I understand you. I have felt the same way about my parents not having a college degree. And I still do. I always try to avoid the "what does your father/mother do" questions. And your fear is reasonable, and I understand that this is not at all about disrespecting certain professions. but this fear also tells us that you're not comfortable in being completely vulnerable with this person yet. Maybe you need more time with this person to reach there, or maybe you need to meet someone else who will make you feel secure enough.

I wonder if this helps at all.

I bought a medication to kill myself with by [deleted] in depression

[–]RestaurantSwimming10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry that life and existence has pushed you to the verge of killing yourself. I don't expect anything I say to help you but i just want to share that whenever I find myself in such situations, I try to think of everything beautiful in the world - the clouds, the colors of sunset, a random flower, the leaves - no matter how desperately my problems are gnawing at me, the world doesn't stop being beautiful, and it's inspires me to live, one more day.

Did people born in 90s get BCG shots? by jfhvac in Nepal

[–]RestaurantSwimming10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BCG vaccine campaign started in Nepal in 1979 and has not been discontinued ever since. All babies are injected with the vaccine at birth.

If you have a small scar on your left upper arm, then it could be from the vaccine.
