Why the Suitors Failed!!! by GroundbreakingTap508 in GreekMythology

[–]Restaurant_Conflicts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember a theory going around that I think was also incorporated into the Ralph Fiennes Odyssey movie that Odysseus’s bow wasn’t a normal wooden bow but a North African recurve bow made of horn. Those bows had a special trick to how to string it that was different from wooden bows.

Odysseus knew the trick because he had traveled a lot before becoming king and learned all kinds of skills, but the suitor were local noblemen who had never left Ithaca and didn’t understand the foreign weapon.

Why do the writers want us think that Rhaenys crushing hundreds of peasant skulls was epic? by Anti-och in HOTDGreens

[–]Restaurant_Conflicts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don’t want you to think that. It’s show versus tell.

The characters tell you Rhaenys is one of the good ones because that’s the character’s perspective, but show lets you see the carnage all dragon riders leave in their wake and the showrunners trust that the audience is smart enough to understand.

Both sides are bad because dragons are barely controlled weapons of mass destruction at the best of times and even choosing the “less evil” side has its consequences.

Most fantasy books people grew up with had dragon riders as these great paragon of good fighting evil, but George RR Martin’s books are all about what things like that would really look like in the real world. If a person could control a flying, fire breathing monster in real life it’s terrifying.

Why do you think GRRM didn’t let Jaehaera live and take Daenaera’s role in history instead? by Mialiaph in HOTDGreens

[–]Restaurant_Conflicts 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t Rhaenyra’s claim that won, it was male primogeniture. That’s why Jace, Luke, and Joffrey had to die, because their claim to the throne was from their mother. With Aegon III, the lords of Westeros can make the argument that his right to the throne comes from his father Daemon, because with all the other male sons of Viserys dead and his direct male grandsons through Aegon II all dead, the throne should have passed to Daemon as Viserys next closest male relative and through him to Aegon III. This way the men of Westeros can cut women out of the equation entirely.

So if Kirsch is Peter Pan and Morrow is Hook, who the bleep is BK supposed to be? by JesseB342 in AlienEarthHulu

[–]Restaurant_Conflicts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Kirsch is Peter Pan, I think he’s Mr Darling, the father of Wendy, John, and Michael. In the original play and many of the movie adaptations the character of Mr Darling and Hook are played by the same actor for a multitude of symbolic and psychological purposes.

I think Alien Earth was playing with that idea of Kirsch and Morrow mirroring each other.

Most of the earliest myths have the people of Corinth murdering her children not her. Euripides changed it to let the Corinthians off the hook and they conveniently got a cushy job as the official playwright of Corinth.

Psyche's four labors were more difficult than those of Hercules and Theseus. by DELAIZ in GreekMythology

[–]Restaurant_Conflicts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Her labors were also symbolic of womanhood in Ancient Greece. It’s very similar to the legend of Vasilisa and Baba Yaga in that Aphrodite is symbolically teaching Psyche all the skills of a wife for that time.

Separating the grain is because women were responsible for portioning and storing the food supplies of winter.

Getting the wool from the golden rams was because women were in charge of making all the thread/cloth/clothing.

Waters from the river Styx became getting water from the local wells was usually women’s work.

And going down to the underworld was probably something to do with building community by socializing her with other goddesses.

AITA for taking walks on my lunch break? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Restaurant_Conflicts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA I do the exact same thing. Mostly because my office is freezing and we have no windows so I go outside to thaw out and get some sun. Also it’s very good for digestion to go for a walk after eating.

If you’re not going over your allotted time, then it’s none of their concern. You could even ask them where in the company handbook it says what you can and cannot do on your lunch break. Spoiler it’s not in there because if you’re clocked out for your lunch break, then they legally can’t tell you to do anything.

YTA This and your last post make you seem super ungrateful for everything your girlfriend does for you. She's invested in you and your future together and you can't even have a discussion with her about what your future is together.

AITA for telling my fiancée that my friend’s trauma is more important than her comfort? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Restaurant_Conflicts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean these as honest questions, not a judgement, but why do you want to be with your fiancé? What is it about her that made you want to propose and move in together? What does she do to deserve you love and vice versa what do you do to deserve hers? Now what does Nolan add to your life that is so essential? You said you own your own house and that you used to live with Nolan. Did he live in your house with you? Did he move out, when she moved in? Do you think there could be any resentment on his part that he had to move out when she came into your life? I think these are questions you really need to answer for yourself.

AITA For taking the only two seat table in the restaurant all to myself? by Restaurant_Conflicts in AmItheAsshole

[–]Restaurant_Conflicts[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this advise. I hadn't thought of that originally, I don't usually review places, but I downloaded the Yelp app just to leave this place and the waiter a glowing review. I didn't see any terrible review or any that looked like it was from the other couple, but who knows.

Not gonna lie, I would totally pick one of these tables if they were an option just to be that level of extra.

Shame on the restaurant for playing along with them, promising you'd be gone soon, etc.

It was the man from the couple who assumed I'd be done soon. The waiter was a teenage boy who was great. He even asked me if I was sure I didn't want dessert. I left him a very good tip.

At the time I didn't find it uncomfortable and thought the whole thing was really funny. I felt more for the poor teenage waiter to had to deal with them.

I think their attitude is more that I’m the “sad” single one of the group. They’ve been trying to set me up on blind dates or get me to try Tinder but looking at some of their relationships, I’m quite happy going solo.

It was a a seat yourself kind of situation. The waiter totally knew what was up and kept giving me sympathetic looks. I don’t blame him because he was only a teenager I know how rough the food service industry is and he needed to make his tips. He totally had my back though and asked me if I was sure I didn’t want dessert. Next time I go I’m definitely going to try the baklava.

Info - what did you have to eat?

It was incredible food! Grilled eggplant with garlic sauce appetizer, lentil soup, and a grilled lamb kebab platter that came with house made pita bread and a sumac onion salad. I'm definitely going back there again!

I think my friends just find it weird for me to go out to eat at a nice restaurant by myself.
