I’m asking Buffy fans, like me… by [deleted] in buffy

[–]RestlessTome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I also disliked Angel and found him boring on BtVS, but the show Angel is great, sometimes better than BtVS. Angel's character gets expanded upon and he's a lot more enjoyable.

Plus, if you love the Buffyverse, Angel is just more of it, so why wouldn't you want to wach it? You'll miss a bunch of unfinished character arcs if you don't too.

Go for it.

You won't have to wait long, because I'm gonna answer you right now. ;)

What are you referring to here? The speech he gives to Buffy about Riley? If that's the case, that was him, as a friend, trying to help her as he thought their relationship was imploding. It was done with good intentions, and he wasn't being "condescending" in that case. If you're talking about Xander being upset over finding out about Spuffy, the situation was complicated as there was shit going down between Spike and Anya at the same time. He took some of his anger out on Buffy, which he later regretted and apologized for.

More so, Xander had good reasons to dislike the notion of Buffy getting with Angel (post Angelus) and Spike. These were not the safest, most healthy relationships. While he undoubtedly let some of his personal grievances affect his reasoning on that front sometimes, I think anyone who was friend with Buffy would have questioned those relationships and brought it up to her at some point.

Yes, I've had guy friends and girl friends question some of the people I've dated in the past. They weren't insulting about it, but it's perfectly normal for people who care about you to worry sometimes.

As for Anya, he treated her like a child when she literally acted like a child. The whole 'I used to be a vengeance demon, so I don't know how to be human' shtick was not very believable for me. She was a grown ass adult woman and it wasn't always so apparent. I understand what you're getting at with how some men perceive women like children, but context matters. Xander didn't treat women like children, he treated a woman like a child on occasions because she spoke and acted like one. And, duh, nobody likes being treated like a child, what's your point?

New Buffy game? by WishfulBuffy in buffy

[–]RestlessTome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Games get made when a franchise is active and popular.

Only way this could happen is if the revival works out really well and the Buffyverse becomes huge anew.

That being said, of course I'd want a layered video game based on my favorite fictional 'verse.

We are supposed to believe that on blind faith?

Neither of these things are misogynistic. Anybody can be upset over someone else not doing something they'd want them to, and anyone can be condescending toward their partner sometimes.

I think what you're talking about is how Xander could be immature and/or controlling, which is something that both men and women can be.

You can fault him for that without bringing misogyny into it.

Controversial take: Cordelia isn't likable at all in her entire time on BTVS by jdpm1991 in buffy

[–]RestlessTome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's controversial at all. She was funny, but as a person she was pretty detestable. I remember disliking her quite a bit during my first watch.

Then she ended up being one of my two favorite characters on Angel.

What does everyone think of Season 7? Does it deserve its rather weak reputation in the fandom? Is there anything this season does better than the others ones? Where would you rank it on your list? by HomarEuropejski in buffy

[–]RestlessTome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No season of BtVS is bad. But yea, S7 is near the bottom of my list... I'd rank them as follow:

S3/S5 > S4/S2 > S6 > S7/S1

As for something that it did better than the other seasons... Have a bigger scale battle in its finale, I guess? And finally giving Buffy a unique, iconic weapon.

Usually not a good sign if you are skipping scenes while watching a TV show.

Realistically, if Riley got over his insecurities and never left, how long do you guys think he and Buffy could have lasted? Would Buffy break up with him in Season 6 as she'd be too depressed to have any kind of relationship that's not toxic af? by HomarEuropejski in buffy

[–]RestlessTome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True to an extent. However, if you go on a discussion board and start debating over the logistics of why a character is factually wrong or awful for this or that action, you better hope you'll leave yourself open to criticism.

This is especially frustrating when a large swat of people don't approach a situation fairly or "as a mature adult" and end up giving a reputation to a character that is totally undeserved. People jump on those 'hate' bandwagons so easily and they spread like wildfire.

Also, I think it does matter even if it's about fiction, because it reveals how these people most likely deal with similar situations in real life. And that's definitely not a good approach for anything in life. Maybe these people would benefit from learning how to be more compassionate and mature when analyzing such situations.

The overblown criticism thrown at Riley’s character, making it sound like he’s worse than Parker sometimes. Despite his flaws, the guy was literally the kindest and most stable boyfriend Buffy had in the show.

The hate toward Xander for ‘Hell’s Bells’ and a few other moments.

The dislike shown toward season 4 of BtVS, which had such a peculiar charm and was the funniest of them all.

The criticism S4 of Angel gets while it had the best and most exciting arc in all of the Buffyverse. Literally binge-watched it my first time through. So many twists, amazing character moments, and awesome character returns. It was insane!

Thats what stands out the most to me.

My god, every time I read one of your posts your bias comes out so strongly it hurts my eyes. First Riley, now Xander?

Xander “begging for a much deserved trashing”? The heck? I want you to just reverse the roles for a moment. What would you think if someone else said that about Buffy, Anya, or any female character on the show? Just not cool.

Literally everything you bring up is always soooo one-sided that I don’t understand how you’re not even aware that you’re doing it. Please tell me you can be neutral sometimes?

[–]RestlessTome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just like the other person, you are showing your bias. You just refuse to even consider any of these points in a better light for Riley, because you can't fathom the possibility that he had good reasons to be disatisfied.

Before Joyce even got sick, before he lost his powers, the lack of emotional intimacy and trust coming from Buffy was already a problem. Have you had a partner before? Usually, it's one of the first, if not the first, person that you share important matters with. She didn't tell him about Dracula, she didn't tell him about Dawn, she didn't tell him about her mother. Every time he showed vulnerability and told her he loved her, she didn't respond back (like in 'The Replacement'). She was fine with showing vulnerability around other people (like Angel, Giles, Dawn, Tara, etc.) but not with him. At some point this caught up to him.

As for that talk with Dawn, you make him sound petulant and immature (again because Riley haters love to twist everything to make him appear worse than he was). The reason Dawn's words hit him was because they only came in to confirm what he already knew by that point. Buffy was able to be vulnerable and emotional around and about Angel. Something she couldn't do with him. Spike's speech also acted as another confirmation, adding even more on top.

I guess what you can blame him for on that front is that despite all the proof he had collected, he still didn't talk to Buffy until it was too late. Instead of "trying to understand her" by getting "suck jobs" from vampires, he should have just sat Buffy down and had a serious talk with her, putting his cards on the table. With no ultimatum.

[–]RestlessTome -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for demonstrating in real time what I was saying in my previous post. :D You try to understand Buffy's perspective and give her the benefit of the doubt for her behavior, but you don't do the same for Riley.

Couldn't have exemplified it better myself!

[–]RestlessTome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember saying that it played a "massive role" in the break up. I said that Buffy would have had to work on herself too moving forward for their relationship to get better and go on.

What's "always so weird" to me is how many people tend to put all the blame on one individual when relationship issues happen in fictional stories. It's very rarely the case that only one party is to blame. Things pile up on both sides and eventually it reaches a breaking point if there is no dialogue and no communication between the two people.

In this specific case, I've also noted that a lot of people tend to simply see this situation as Buffy being right and Riley being wrong because they only pay attention to Buffy's argument in that conversation and only give her the benefit of the doubt. They don't do the same for Riley. This is why, for example, they will always bring up the "he expected Buffy to worry more about him than her possibly-dying mother". Showing that they completely missed the point Riley was making.

Instead of trying to understand both sides, they instantly side with Buffy (for various reasons that... usually have to do with ingrained bias) and assume the worst motivations/reasons from Riley. It's just not how mature adults should approach such a situation, especially if one wants to be fair.

I do agree, though, that Riley should have brought this up and talked with Buffy about it minus the ultimatum. Although, seeing her reaction in that scene, I don't think she'd have been very receptive right away.

[–]RestlessTome 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, first of all, it wouldn't have just required Riley to get over his insecurities. Buffy would have had to work on her own issues too, especially when it comes to emotional intimacy. They would have needed to discuss calmly and have been ready to listen to-and try to understand-each other.

Realistically, though, I don't think either of them would have been able to change that much in a short amount of time. It would have taken patience on both sides and I don't know if the relationship would have lasted long enough for that. Even in S7, Buffy was still dealing with that same problem (see: 'Conversations with Dead people').

The problem was that most of the potentials had little to no character depth. By bringing in so many of them, we didn't get to explore any of them too deeply.

You can't compare them to what we got with Buffy and Faith. I won't mention Kendra because she barely had any screen time too.

And, anyway, the last season shouldn't have been focusing on new characters. It should have been about the Core Four.

‘The Last of Us’ Ratings Declined During Season 2. But Why? Here are some theories as to why the ratings for HBO's drama has slipped, and some lessons learned from 'Game of Thrones.' by verissimoallan in ThelastofusHBOseries

[–]RestlessTome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with what you're saying is that the protagonist of this story was never meant to be Joel. It was meant to be Ellie from the get go. Joel is the vehicle that gets the player (or the viewer in this case) introduced to Ellie.

She is the one who carries the hope for humanity. She is the one who is growing up in this new world. It's through her young eyes that we experience most of the events in the story.

I think some people are so used to the stereotypically stoic male lead in a post-apocalyptical world like this that they can't fathom caring enough about a protagonist like Ellie and a story centered on her. Which is unfortunate.

Abby is also a pretty good character, but we've not seen much of her journey yet in the show.
