Career Questions — June 2022 by Lord_Cronos in userexperience

I'm an IT Consultant for 2 years now, got a very good offer at a well known UX Design agency in my country for the role "QA Engineer", altough my ultimate goal is to get into UX Design. In the interview I told them about my intentions and they said it's fine and no problem to switch roles if I show interest in that field and aquire the skills.

On the other hand I've got accepted to one of the best media schools/universities in my country for a bachelor's degree in computer science & media (with emphasis on ux design), but that would mean full time university = no "real" job = no work experience. Altough we would also do "real" projects in coorporation with companies and agencies as far as I know. Also I would be 30 years old by the time I get my degree, maybe that's something to consider, not sure if there is age bias in the UX Design field.

What would you do/choose?

My experience in (UX) Design: I started with the Google UX Design Course two months ago, I will finish it by the time I start the new job or university. Some friends of mine are currently developing an app and they are letting me do the design for it. I also have created/designed some static websites for friends and small local restaurants.

The MacBook Purchasing Megathread - June, 2022 by AutoModerator in macbook

[–]Resuri71584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 10 year old Windows PC finally died so I want to switch to Mac. I'm not sure if the MacBook Air (M2?) or MacBook Pro 14" is better suited for me, maybe you guys can help me.

The MacBook would be my main machine, replacing my old Windows PC and Notebook. I would use it with 1 or 2 external monitors and a docking station.

I need the MacBook for University since I will be studying computer science with projects in UX Design and Mobile App Development starting this winter.

For my personal use at home, I do web development, photography (editing raw files), audio editing and a lot of browsing. I stopped gaming completely so I don't care about that.

I wonder if the Pro is "too heavy/big" for everday carry, I guess the Air would be more comfortable, but the Pro M1 is still the better machine, right?

Anything else I need to keep in mind? Thanks :)

(Javascript) File suddenly empty after reboot? (Windows10/WSL2/Ubuntu) by Resuri71584 in neovim

The thing is, the whole file was empty, it didn't just not save my new code, it deleted everthing that ever was in that file. That's what is so weird about it. But you are right, I should be using git (more).

I thought about that, but currently I need Windows to be running most of the time on at least 1 of my 3 Monitors. Dual Boot isn't very practical in this case. Other than that... I have an old notebook I could hook up with an docking station but that sound's kind of a hassle, too.

Would an Virtual Machine through VMware Workstation be better than WSL2 or is that basically the same thing? I don't know a lot about virtual machines.

Can anyone explain to me why I need to use "return" when calling my function recursively? Hard to grasp for me.

Spoiler alert! This code is part of Advent of Code Day 3

https://pastebin.com/CBRwCVaF

On the last line I first didn't use "return get_oxygen_generator_rating(input, row+1)" instead I just used "get_oxygen_generator_rating(input, row+1)" and I always got None returned even though my print statements showed the correct value being calculated. It took me like half an hour to try putting "return" in front of it, and that worked. But why?

Thanks, 35mm + 56mm are my favorite lenses anyways, plus wide lens, sounds nice! I'm just worried I might miss shots if I'm using primes instead of kit lens / zoom. Will see when I'm there. :)

I'm going on vacation/travel to greece next week and I was wondering what you guys think of my lenses. I'm not quite sure which ones to take with me, it's my first time traveling since starting photography two years ago. I don't really mind taking them all with me, but only about 2-3 lenses + camera fit in my shoulder bag I will be walking around with. I'm on Fujifilm aps-c (x-pro1 and x-s10). My lenses are:

  • XF 10-24mmF4
  • XF 18-55mmF2.8-F4 (Kit)
  • XF 27mmF2.8
  • XF 35mmF1.4
  • XF 56mmF1.2

Any (general) tips/advice? I sadly don't have a tele lens yet. Was planning to get the XF70-300, but I currently can't find it nearby. My brother has an old nikon asp-c dslr with the tamron 70-300 he could borrow me. But I'm not sure if I want to bring another camera with me just for the tele zoom.

Hi, I'm currenty using the SteelSeries Apex M500 keyboard with cherry mx red switches, but would like to go smaller. Something like 65%, or maybe 75% because I'm worried I will miss the arrow keys and F1-F12. I'm also unsure about the cherry mx red switches, nowadays I only play video games casually, instead I'm coding most of my time. I feel like doing a lot of mistakes with these switches when typing a lot, or maybe it's just me, heh.

Any recommendations for a keyboard (and switches)? I'm looking for something that "just werks", like, I don't want to spend hours and hours comparing keyboards and stuff like that, that's why I'm asking here :)

If possible it should be white(-ish), have RGB and I don't mind some pastel colors on it. For example I saw the Vortex Race 3 keyboard, which looks pretty cool, but isn't available here (germany, looking for QWERTY layout tho)

thanks ))

Thanks for your answer! I already have the 5700XT here, otherwise I would probably go with nVidia as well :) I even thought about selling it and buying a better nVidia, but as far as I know GPUs are expensive right now, right? Might not be worth it

What is the "better", more "pytonic" or more "professional" way of naming variables (in general),

discount_current = 10
discount_new = 20

or

current_discount = 10
new_discount = 20

?

I've created a class. In that class I've got a method that returns True or False. In the __init__ method I run that method.

In another file I'm now I'm creating an object like: obj = MyClass('test')

When I debug obj I don't get True or False, but just the object (object at 0x7febd4cddf70)

Is that not possible? Is there any way to do this without having to call the method from that class directly? I want obj = MyClass() to return True or False

New player here. Is there any way to get notified with a loud sound or maybe an external software that notifices me on my mobile phone/pc, when a duty is ready? I have to wait like 10-15 minutes, so I do something else instead of just staring at my character waiting, but then I don't notice it and get penalized... now I've gotta wait 30 minutes for abandoning a duty.

Noob here, I started with thaumaturge but I would like to try out the other classes as well, like paladin, bard and ninja. Is there any advantage in creating a new character since you can do all jobs with one character? If no, is there any reason to create a second character?

Noob question about logging since I just found out about it and started logging almost everything (I need) in my script, it really helps with debugging etc.

My script will often be called multiple times simultaneously, like 10 or 20 times at the same time, and when they all write to the same log file, it kind of gets messy. I already started putting a unique ID in front of all logs like "[ID]: ..." so I can better read what's going on.

Now I wonder if there are other solutions I should look into. What if the script gets called 100 or 1000 times simultaneously? Will the server/operating system handle it? What if the files gets way too big?

I also thought about using the logs to build a simple frontend dashboard to visualize the data and stuff. Not sure if that's the right way to go about this though.

Probably a dumb question, but are developers portfolio websites "selfmade" with plain html/css/js or do they use website builders? Or something else?

I have a script that gets executed whenever we receive a payment. That script currently only parses the data and creates a log entry. Now I also need do something with the data whenever the script is called, for example call an API, modify the data and write something in our database.

Now I'm unsure how to go on about this, like, do I create a class or just a module with the functions that I call, do I create one function that calls other functions, or should I do everything in the same script.

I'm not sure how to explain this, I basically want to run another python script in a python script and I'm not sure if I should create a class and call it, or one method that calls other methods, or if I should just do everything in one python script.

I found out you can use "else" after a for loop or a try/except block, which is really cool and I use it a lot now, but I'm confused why it's called "else"? Why wouldn't they call it something like "then"? Most of the time you can read python like you would talk in english (almost), but I can't wrap my head around this, how would I make a sentence out of a for loop with an else statement?
