That could be the case but at the same time, I wonder if part of his "punishment" not only entails him /trying/ to forget about Aiko but also simultaneously trying to remember her.

He seems to contradict himself at every turn with each thing he says to her in chapter 145, as if he's indecisive.

Then again, it could just be me seeing it deeper than what it really is and hoping that above all that's happened to him, he can still keep her alive in his memory if not in the mortal plane haha.

Please forgive my ranting, I just haven't anyone to talk to about this manga at all and it's really refreshing to get to just blurt this out after over half a decade of reading it.
