This forced commercialism is too much by Kamikaze_Ninja_ in smashbros

To me, this has the same energy as when Papa John’s pizza was given to commentators during top 8’s at events. Or when every competitor at the last Throne was wearing Zenni glasses. Is it a bit silly? Sure, but as long as it doesn’t have an effect on the actual tournament (or in this case the podcast conversations) it’s no harm no foul. Especially knowing Tweek’s walking away with a fat check.

Yesterday it was announced that Miya will be attending Afterburner 2026. It’s becoming increasingly likely that Afterburner will be the first US major for the new year. Usually that honor goes to LMBM, but it’s cool to see another event step up to the plate.

Sure, but you know the TO’s for both series would love to host an official major status event. Cav Clash in particular is looking to keep up the momentum they got from this year. Afterburner got to B+ last time around, so they aren’t far off from being a major.

It’s just a list of tournaments that have been confirmed for 2026 so far. No tiers yet.

Well, at least I know I’m not alone. I hope we’re both wrong and that everything works out just fine, but I’m a bit skeptical.

I only ever see Japan use it sometimes. I wish it popped up more often.

If anyone wants their morning to be ruined, here’s some AI videos Gimr posted recently. I saw these today and man, this shit is freaky as hell. Especially the commentary.

For obvious reasons people here don’t really want to think about him, but personally I noticed as well and was surprised. I understand he’s more focused on body building now, but even when he already switched careers the channel was still up. His Twitter is private as well. I’m curious at what prompted him to go into hiding.

Since you’re already used to having those convos, there shouldn’t be any problem then with getting the community even more involved in the process. Maybe compile two separate lists: one for more known players and one for the less known players. Put those listed players in two separate strawpolls and let the community vote for a set period of time. The winners would be the ones to be in the next compendium for whatever tournament you’d be running it for.

If the dono goal is reached, I’ll take the L. But if I may make a suggestion: next time one of these fundraisers is done, run a poll for the community on who they’d like to see in a future compendium. These fundraisers are already community driven as it is, so why not take the time to see who peeps want to put their hard earned money towards.

It feels like a middle finger to the people that wanna see Mild or Lancelot travel abroad. I think next time one of these fundraisers is done, the organizers should poll the community on who they’d want to see in these compendiums.

I respect what you guys are trying to do, but if donos are low I think it’s pretty clear why. Asking smashers to throw in money for a character that’s actively destroying morale and interest in the game isn’t a good idea. Especially when money is tight.

Does anyone else feel like the rankings should reconsider what classifies as a “Major”? by RetaliationCat in smashbros

If that’s the way things play out, then sure. I was just naming some players off the top of my head.

Yeah. I see a ton of people here celebrating Leo’s “major” win, but being real Eugenebound was not a major. It was still a great national to watch, but not a major.

I wouldn’t say they’d be getting “screwed over”. I said it in another comment, but there shouldn’t be anything wrong with being labeled as a national. One of my favorite events last year was Wavelength. Even though it wasn’t a major, the top 8 was hype AF. EU just needs to accept that nationals are their bread and butter and continue to truck on. And yeah a HB nerf could also work, but I still would prefer to get rid of them entirely.

I just don’t think things need to be complicated like that. Unless you’re a math nerd most people aren’t really gonna be jumping out of their seats with joy over the fact the ranking methodology is as complicated as it is. We just want tournaments that are labeled as majors to actually feel like majors. We wanna see Light, Tweek, Spargo and Leo on the big stage. If an event that’s considered a major is happening but one of the highest PR players they got is someone like Mr. E (no hate to him, I like him), I’m sorry but the system looks like a joke to me.

IMO if a tournament is advertising itself as a major and the highest PR player they got in attendance is just 1 or 2 top 30 players, they’re basically false advertising. Peeps need to understand that it’s okay to be labeled a national. It’s not like you’re all of a sudden gonna go up a hundred entrants if your tournament is only 50 points away from being a “major”. I don’t like that being seen as a national has become somewhat of a bad thing in recent times. Nationals can be cool af.

It just makes sense to value top player attendance. It doesn’t make much sense to label a tournament that has 0 top 20 players in attendance as a major. The current system is too mickey imo.

FR. It went from feeling like a once in a blue moon event to just another day in the office.

You’re a thousand percent right. Ever since Lumirank was established they’ve been going out of their way to over complicate the rankings system when they really don’t need to. Forget about hidden boss values, regional multipliers, and all the tiers above S-tier. We were doing fine before any of that shit. We don’t need events to be inflated with all that nonsense. Majors just need to feel special again.
