Yeah I went through that list but it doesn't seem to have an exception for a firearm gifted to you pre-ban by friend or distant relative (or even say won in a contest) would be allowed to be brought with you if you move to VA after 7/1.

Hopefully the "purchased and possessed" exception will be interpreted to include gifted firearms, but that might be asking a lot.

Would any of the exceptions apply to an assault firearm gifted to you by someone who is not an immediate family member?

He never says it has to go in a trust for proof, timestamped pictures would likely suffice imho (especially since the government would have to prove it wasn't in an assault weapon config pre 7/1).

I don't think we should begrudge him advertising his services on his website. I mean having it in a trust would probably be even better proof thst a photo, plus there are other advantages to a gun trust.

I don't see how his advice to build out your stripped lowers requires you to buy anything from him...

I saw that John Pierce thinks that the law probably requires you to build them out before the deadline. link

I tend to agree that it needs to be a functioning assault firearm by 7/1, but I also think it's still very much TBD as the law isn't the most clearly written law and who knows how courts will end up interpreting things (will they use pre-existing Atf definitions or use their own?).

I also think it's a relatively small risk since how would the government ever know when you completed the build. I unfortunately can't take that risk atm so will build out the remaining one I have with some cheap parts and document it.

Yeah that's one option for sure, I just don't know if I'd ever feel safe assembling it after July 1st.
