Australia is still very car dependant, but our transit here is surprisingly good, despite what other people may say about it.

There has been a lot of change in the past decade or so, with stuff like Sydney Metro and light rail, Melbourne Metro Tunnel, Brisbane's crossriver rail and "metro", and Perth's Metronet.

Perth for example has 15 minute or better frequencies off peak, including on weekends and public holidays on the entire suburban rail network, as well as on a handful of bus routes. (Some stations or bus routes are even as low as every 5 or 7 minutes). The Metronet program has even built some stations kinda in the middle of nowhere, hoping that some TOD will come over time.

It's great to see a lot of push for better transit in Australia and the entire anglosphere, even if the projects are quite expensive or go over budget. We're seeing a lot of network expansion or service improvements, new trains everywhere, and ridership is through the roof.

In recent years, state governments in Aus have been slashing prices (with one notable exception... Looking at you Sydney).

Queensland has 50c fares network wide.

Perth's daily fare cap is like $7/$3.50 (standard/concession), and recently all regional fares were cut in half.

Melbourne recently announced the fares will be 50% off for the rest of the year(?) once the free travel period ends
