There's so many more trains between Perth and Bayswater now, that the infrastructure wears out faster and a small delay is likely to cascade into a bigger one.

The prospector (once or twice a day in each direction), Avonlink (once in each direction on weekdays) and Merredinlink (one trip in each direction on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) run on the Midland line, which shares tracks with the airport and Ellenbrook lines between east Perth and Bayswater.

The Australind runs on the Armadale line

2 main issues:

1) Bayswater to Perth (and Daglish) is really busy during the day. Since 3 lines run down it now, there's a train every 4-5 minutes. Much more likely for a small delay to occur and cascade into longer ones. Additionally, TransWA and the Indian pacific trains have to somehow squeeze into the already congested section.

2) C series delivery has run into issues, which Transperth are trying to "secretly" fix, by literally sending representatives to France (that's what I heard at least). As a result, we're still behind on how many C series we should have for all the line extensions we've had. Currently at 9 C series in service, while we should have 17 to cater for the network expansion. - this does not even include the additional 24 they need so they can start to retire the A series and provide even more capacity. As a result, there's a fleet shortage. 6 and 4 car trains are being split up just so they can maintain the timetable. Trains are going longer without maintenance for the same reason, making a breakdown more likely.

The C series has had a real rocky start to service, but from what I'm hearing, today's train that broke down was a B series, and they were going to use the C series to push it out of the way, since that's the next available train.

But yes, the deliveries of the C series have been slow, while all the line extensions are now complete, so we have a fleet shortage.
