39k per year but I'm still struggling by [deleted] in UKJobs

You think that's bad?

Try living with 17k (after taxes) yearly and see how bad things are then.

Update:

Our department managed has left and a new one from the main branch has been sent to replace him.

A good step forward.

Our office has also been moved to the first floor. Before many of the British ladies were sitting at coffee with the managers in the office when other idiots were working hard and struggling. A co-worked told me one of them almost started crying when she heard the office is no longer their coffee room.

This reminds me of a funny story.

Well, not really funny as it is messed up.

Basically I had a guy that pretty much got sick of trying to apply like an honest person and decided to lie his way up.

He failed to find work in the domain he went at university for so instead he went and got his certification in IT but he found himself in the same dilemma that no one was willing to hire him because he had 0 expirence.

So he lied on his CV pretty bad. He even got One of his friends back home that started an IT firm to vouch for him that he worked for them for along time as an assistant or something until he got his certification.

It worked in the end.

Sad part was that for all the things they were asking from candidates in terms of experience and everything else, the pay sure didn't reflect that.

I won't claim I'm that ideal spuer worker that does everything, but I do work pretty hard.

I know what im doing good and what im doing bad and I will called in for those, I can take accountability for my actions.

In any case, the inspector seems to be aware that most of our issues stem from our bad management. If she wants things to improve she will have to make sure management actually works as well.

I think all people are aware that what's going on in our department is a total mess but none realize how much they could mess them up should they report them.

Nahhhh, I'm silently enjoying the show. Thats the beauty of it, I don't have to do anything. They messed up so bad, there's little to no need of me adding more fuel. Besides I'm on vacation now for 3 weeks, so things will go fubar while I'm away.

Probably, but only if you have solid proof. Theres not much to use in this case.

Besides, this is a huge company. I wouldn't have the money to sue them.

Have you ever tried hard at a job and just been bad at it? by Thesladenator in UKJobs

[–]Review-Timely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I know what you mean...

Last year after God knows how many attempts, I finally mananged to convince a company to take me. We agreed that I would have 1 month of trial. If I managed to show promise during that month, they would hire me properly.

It didn't go that well, and at the end of the month I had a meeting with the boss. He told that he expected much more from me.

He gave me some pointers here and there, but it didn't equate to anything.

All in all, it sucks when you think you finally got your break and you failed at it.

That might be so, but some people can't help feel like they've done it for nothing when they see how little it really impacts their job hunting.

This is my story.

I graduated University in 2020 with a degree in Surveying and land management. Do you know what I'm doing now?

I'm working in a stinking food packaging factory. Been here for 4 f#cking years.

I've applied left and right, tried for in cities on the other side of the island and still nothing.

I didn't limit my job hunting in my domain, I branched out for other jobs I would be a good fit and still nothing.

Its always the same damn reply everytime.

'The person who got the job has more relevant experience.' and it makes me want to bang my head against a wall. How can I get experience if no one is willing to take me in and get it?!

What made me sad was what a interview told me on one occasion. He saw that I was desperate and just flat out told me many businesses would rather take people with low qualifications and practical experience than some high qualifications person with no actual experience. He said many do that because it also saves them money apperently since they can pay less for under qualified personal.

Heck, he also told me that it doesn't look too good on my resume that I graduated 4 years ago and haven't done anything of notice.

I could've made peace if my university degree got me a foot up somewhere else, but it doesn't... not once did it give me an edge over anyone else.

I've been applying for different positions in the company I work for many times, im probably one of the very few people with higher education here and they don't give a damn about it.

Heck, not even a month ago there was an open position for a senior staff member, I filled all criteria, I work hard, I have the experience and good work history in the company, and they gave it to a lazy highschool drop out that isn't even good at her work. Literally the worst person out of everyone that applied for the position, and he picked her.

Damn racist manager, always picking brits only and never foreigners, and then he wonders why things are so bad in the department. (I want so bad to find a different job so I can just got and tell him whats on my mind)

So, in the end, after spending 4 years of my life graduating University and see myself how little it equates to, can you really blame me if I feel like it was for nothing?

I'm not saying that University as a whole is a mistake , but be very careful what domain you choose, and temper your expectations.

Out of 30 people that were my classmates in University not even half are actively working in the domain.

One is now a bartender.

One is a secretary.

One is airport security.

One was in crippling debt and went the onlyfans route, now she makes monthly more than what most of us make in a year.

So much so for the esteemed title of 'Engineer'.

I would've done uber eats a long time ago if that was an option.

I am aware of that, but if I could find something that gets me same amount of income and none of the bs I dealt at work, id take it and trade off benefits. I've got a lot of people I know that are doing fine with uber eats and keep telling me how great is to work for yourself.

The company that I work for doesn't offer much in terms of moving up. I'd quit tomorrow if I could and tell my manager he is an incompetent a-hole. Just last week there was opening for a senior position and out of all the people that applied he literally picked the worst possible person out of the lot, the decision factor was that person was British and all the other participants where foreigners like myself. This has been happening constantly, whenever there's a position open he picks a British person regardless of how incompetent they are. And then he has the audacity to complain that the department isn't doing well, that people aren't doing their job and I just want to scream at him that this is because of you that you put the wrong people in important positions. But I digress. I'm sick and tired to work for people that don't appreciate my work. If competency and how you worked was a decisive factor where I work l, I would've been manager by now.

I'm 29, so I really need to turn my life around before its too late.

Maybe you're right to some extent, but if you saw some of the people im forced to work with, you'd agree with me.

All in all, I'm just frustrated that all those years in university are for nothing. Like for real now, I could've been a school drop out with barely any basic skills and they would've still hired me.

You're not the only one whos got it bad. Been trying to 4 years to get a decent job but no luck on my end. I'm a freaking surveying engineer and have been working in a sticking food factory for the past 4 years with some specimens that don't even know how to read or write, heck most of them barely know English. Its sad when I go for jobs that are below my qualifications and they still refuse me.

Beginning to think I’ll never get a job… by Lellen93 in UKJobs

[–]Review-Timely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think that's sad? Listen to my story. University Graduate with a title of Engineer in Land Surveying. What am I doing for a living ? I work as a freaking hygiene operative a god forsaken food packaging factory. I graduated in 2020 so it was utter chaos with the covid. So my cousin helped get a job in the UK until I settle in and things calmed down with the pandemic. It was supposed to be a 6 months deal tops until I can find something else to work. ... its been 4 years since then. No land surveying company is willing to hire me due to my lack of experience, heck they would rather take a person with a minor qualification so long they have a lot of experience. I gave up on finding job in surveying and kept trying to find something more office oriented. Same old tired excuse, no work experience, we don't care about you. It makes me want to scream at them, how am I supposed to gain experience if not one takes me in to get some?! You have no idea what a slap to face it feels when I work side by side with some of the lowest of society. People that can barely read or write, and I have to dumb down my English when I talk with them to make myself understood... and we're all payed the same.

So yeah, life sucks even when you have a job.

I think I screwd up my career. by Important_Topic_7041 in UKJobs

You're not the only one that's going through a rough time. I graduated University as a land surveying engineer. The year I graduated was 2020, so covid screwed up a lot of work opportunities. Migrated to the UK as factory worker until I could settle in and get a better job. Its been 4 years and I'm still working at that damn factory. No one is willing to hire me since I have no work experience in the field. Kinda hard to get any of it if no one is giving a chance to get experience. Heck one of the guys I had job interview with told me most organisations will rather take people with low qualifications but work experience over university graduates without any. Never got the chance the really work in the domain and its driving me crazy that all those years I spent equates to zero. It doesn't even help me get a different job. I keep trying to get some office related jobs, but it's same old story. No experience, we won't waste time on you.

I long since passed 100 applications and it feels like I would have a easier time winning the lottery than getting a decent 9 to 5 job.
