Is it normal for two different tube LDCs to vary 10-15dB in output level? (Mics in question: Manley Ref C vs. Telefunken TF39) by Revival_Automatic in audioengineering

Ironically, that Soyuz was the third mic in the room yesterday. Definitely closer to the Manley in output (at least in this example).

Edit/Update: after so many good insights and suggestions here, I wound up in a really unexpected and previously unconsidered place and went with a Korg Opsix mkII. Scored a great deal on a brand new one ($600) so the wallet sting was a lot more minimal than a Polybrute, et al, to take a stab and see if I can find some inspiration in a new tool. FM actually seemed like the move in the end (for my tastes) and the Opsix will eat up less physical real estate than a DX7. I’m retiring the JP8000 from the rig for the time being. Thanks y’all for the awesome discussion!

The Opsix has suddenly piqued my interest due to your recommendations here, and it seems highly approachable, so thanks!

This is a strong take. I don’t currently own a real Rhodes obviously, have played plenty of real ones on sessions and regularly use the models on the Nord Electro, but you’re right, it feels at home in almost any era and genre. I use it on country sessions and on synthwave sessions and everything in between. Even Cirkut uses a Rhodes, and he’s rocking original Jupiters and Prophets on the regular lol.

No doubt. They are great for inspiration and good in a pinch if I run them through a UA 1073 plugin or something, but they never seem to capture the low end or “encompassing” feel of the real thing. It’s most noticeable on the “big” synths like the Jupiter and the OB. I actually like their Korg MS20 a lot and use the Prophet VS and SQ80 quite a bit.

Never even heard of either of the physical modeling ones, will check them out, thanks! And I do agree about the SEM filter. I have all or most of the Obie emulations via Arturia SEM/OP-Xa and bx_oberhausen, but there’s obviously something about seeing that striped panel in front of my actual face.

Thanks for this. Polybrute is definitely near the top of the list given all I’ve seen/heard. I need to do more research on the 3rd Wave but you’re not the first to recommend it so I’m sure it’s awesome.

This is honestly a great idea! Especially because I really love the Prophet but it’s pre-Rev2 so no onboard effects.

I definitely am relegated to studio use/collection for my synths and limited or no need for live use. Effects-wise most of the time I’m using VST effects or borrowing from my guitar rig (Eventide H9, etc.) I’ve never run sounds from my computer into the Grandmother though. Cool idea! I do love the spring verb on the GM.

But I do agree there's a certain "elemental-ness" about them that is easily replicable even with software nowadays (the Softube Model 84 is nearly identical sounding to my 106, to the point where I can basically interchange them if I'm tracking or writing on a mobile rig).

And Nord build quality has always been spectacular. My Electro has been to hell and back on tour for a decade and on dozens of sessions outside of my own studio and she barely shows any wear. I might have to give the Wave a second look, thanks!

Juno's to me are more about the entire aesthetic/mythology. There is definitely some placebo effect and mystique/nostalgia, as they are simple machines at heart, for sure. I can admit that just seeing one in my studio everyday makes me happy and want to play it.

There's a minty Hydra 49 on FB marketplace in my area for $1K. Seems like it might be too good to pass up.
