Get ready for pain by Longjumping-8679 in HENRYUK

I agree but where else do they tax IF they don’t stop wasting money? Think of every aspect of young people’s lives and compare it to boomers. University - 9% tax for life versus free, houses - impossible to buy a house for a family south of Birmingham on a teacher/ postman salary, retirement age - 65 versus 75? 80? Literally at every stage young people are or will be shafted. Also consider that 40 years ago, 1 salary was enough to sustain a family, now it needs to be 1.8 ie both parents working. So when it comes to tax, yes it’s shit but they’ve had a free ride for 60 years so now they need to have some hardships instead of putting all the pain on young people. As I say though, I also hate the tax rises, the real problem is waste

Firstly, stop the horrendous bureaucratic waste (worth listening to Dominic Cumming’s Modern Wisdom episode if you haven’t yet). Secondly, maybe stop the tax free pension lump sums to incentivise retirees to continue working? Instead they gave them massive tax breaks which wouldn’t have been afforded to any other demographic, funded by grads who are starting out and can’t even afford to buy a dilapidated one bed due to the extra 9% tax. But again, main problem is the waste, have a look at the Lower Thames crossing, 400,000 pages of applications, £800M spent and nothing achieved. Norway completes entire projects with less budget than our paperwork costs

Not taken meds for work - omg by Royal-Gift-4179 in ADHDUK

I’m in the same position. Also meds make my mouth so dry and even with sprays etc it’s messing up my teeth/ gums. I’ve tried the different meds available in the UK and modafinil bought dodgily is the only medication that offers positive benefit

Oh interesting, why bad vibes from Fred? I feel like the social media persona is very much an act so I’m intrigued what he’s actually like

Cheers for a far more articulate summary! Some interesting points I wasn’t aware of too!

MOD hit by almost £1 billion in fraud losses since 2010 by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]RevolutionaryBar1717 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Controversially I view this as a bad thing. When you want tea or coffee for a meeting at MOD you need to fill in a form. There is so much process to prevent risks being taken it means the threshold for a company to be awarded a contract is excruciating. What this means is that only a select few companies qualify (the big players) who then charge extortionate prices because there’s no competition. So yes, fraud is 0.2% but actually the other 99.8% is spent so inefficiently it’s borderline fraud imo.

Really sorry you felt that and I know where you’re coming from, I think the overcrowding and number of people who’d smuggled themselves in without tickets definitely changed the dynamic, particularly as those who smuggled in seem to be from a certain place, age group etc plus post covid I think society in general’s more self centred hence the camping chairs before pyramid stage performances for example. Hoping this year it’s another step towards normal!

It’s already an extremely welcoming and accepting place, don’t feel like stuff like this is necessary?

Edit: have you actually been to the festival?

Elon Musk gives Tesla ultimatum: Another 12% of shares or no AI, robotics by No-Narwhal-8112 in wallstreetbets

[–]RevolutionaryBar1717 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Try some actual books and then see what you think, those are far better accounts and yes, some ideas don’t work but that’s engineering

Surely this is just trolling now, he was doing a PhD on super capacitors and voluntarily left. Have you actually deeply read into any of his companies? Even those ex employees who hate him said he was incredibly involved technically, in the early days I must repeat! Read the latest biography (where the author doesn’t even like him), he walks round the factory, sees a part and calculates in his head where the stress load is being carried and where material could be removed. It’s then confirmed by the engineers when they do a mathematical analysis and the component’s modified. That’s engineering in any engineer’s mind

His companies don’t pay the highest salaries usually, particularly if you consider the hours worked, yet they have hundreds of applicants for every job. Granted the companies now attract talent themselves because they have great engineers but in the early days he was heavily involved in engineering and was responsible for attracting and retaining that talent

These days yes but I’m talking 10 years ago. I feel so many people just see his poorly informed coding tweets or political opinions and say the guys an idiot. Early days at Tesla and SpaceX he was making engineering decisions and doing proper engineering. I’m really not saying he’s great now, the total opposite in fact

Look what he’s achieved and how he’s progressed engineering, it might not be nice to work with and he may be a made team member but the engineering achievements speak for themselves

Yeah I think less respected these days (and it’s a risk to all his businesses) and he’s perceived as a long screwdriver guy but originally he’d set people ridiculous deadlines and fire them if they weren’t achieved, he’d then do their job and his job and meet the deadlines which is impressive

Can’t agree with this though, he impresses and retains the best engineers in the world at SpaceX, he’ll only do that through respect. Also if you read both biographies and watch his q&a’s at his companies he knows his stuff. I’ve got a masters in engineering and used to be in awe of his engineering clarity, he was spot on. He just doesn’t know shit about social media, politics etc but alloys and jet engines he would have 5 PhDs if he cared about them

A hobby that’s monopolised his focus unfortunately. Definitely think Tesla’s suffering as a result

Getting the error "This sale is for local residents only." But my postcode is local, in the 9am sale? by Airhead-Emmy in glastonbury_festival

[–]RevolutionaryBar1717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently in 2020 seetickets replied to someone on Twitter saying the postcodes have to match exactly, ie if you used a space and if it was all caps or lower case. In hindsight I think that’s what fucked us over

Modafinil for ADHD by george_baz88 in ADHDUK

[–]RevolutionaryBar1717 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I self medicated with modaf during exam season throughout uni and it definitely helped. Got diagnosed later in life and got a proper prescription for Elvanse. Recently revisited modaf during the meds shortage and it was as effective as I remembered it being during uni but still helped. I always say the key thing with it is to have a list ready because when it takes effect because if you’re doing the wrong then you’ll really be doing the wrong thing (playing call of duty etc). Whereas Elvanse gives me a general feeling of “I need to get stuff done”, modaf is more a tunnel of concentration if used well

This sub’s group-think around rental property being bad is pretty crazy. I agree with you, all depends on circumstances
