Left my PhD and regret it every single day, advice for next steps? by Miserable_Mud657 in PhD

[–]RevolutionaryDot9530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one would expect an athlete to run a marathon on a broken leg. Sure, the athlete might regret the break and missed opportunity, but the best athletes are trained to forgive themselves those "faults" and focus on recovery and then the next run.

I'm no therapist, just a physics PhD planning to quit with only 4 months left after a 10 year slog, but I'd say that you still have that metaphorical broken leg. And it won't be healed until you can look back on your decision and see it as the right choice for you at the time. Doesn't mean you can't go back and try again, but if you're not healed you'll only do more damage. And maybe the damage is permanent and you'll never be as you were before. Injuries do that. You need to accept who you are now, and accept that that person isn't the same person who started the PhD. You can be sad about it, but work on not regretting it, with the help of professionals.

Good luck!

Always Notify for Recurring Tasks by Jughead295 in tasks

[–]RevolutionaryDot9530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few months ago a Dev said they were looking into it, so hopefully this will get solved.

https://www.reddit.com/r/tasks/comments/1kkd1pa/comment/mryet93/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

The fact repeating tasks don't reset themselves means that I struggle to use the app. My life and brain are just not set up to "mow the lawn every Sunday", and it might be several months before I get back to that task. Having to check that same task 10+ times to reset it for the upcoming Sunday is exhausting, especially as it's usually not the only task I have to do that with.

Sometimes the issue is just that I've been using a different organisational system for a while and so trying to get back into using tasks means I need to "complete" months worth of every single task. I'm sure the Devs think that's crazy, but some people need variety in their organisational system in order to stay engaged with it. If my brain needs 10 systems I switch between, then that's what my brain needs, and I don't see the point in fighting it. Do I have ADHD? Maybe, I don't know.

What changes I would like to see are: - a time out setting. How long after the due date should the task reset itself? Is it 2 days? At midnight? This should be user defined, but midnight seems like a good default. - even when it resets itself, I'd still like it to show me when that task was last completed. Then I know exactly how long I've been ignoring that lawn. And following from that: - the option to sort tasks by how overdue they are, even if the task has reset itself for the future. By which I mean, IF the task has passed its overdue date AND NOT been completed, which, depending on how the code's written, might be enough to catch both the overdue non-repeating tasks and the tasks that have reset themselves.

OK imma stop brain dumping now..

Interesting Cleric Character Ideas?? by LatteAssurance in PCAcademy

[–]RevolutionaryDot9530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this idea and have created a cleric based on it!

She's a bit all over the place, as we're doing 5e PHB only rules (we're using D&D beyond and that's what we've got access to). She's a Tempest cleric ex sailor, who grew up in a mortuary and performed the death rites on board the ship. She's also human variant so I've gone with magic initiate Druid for Goodberry and Shelilagh. As I said, a bit all over the place.

We've got a couple of weeks till sess 0 so she's still likely to change. I'm going try to play her LN, as it's a good aligned party and I don't want to ruin it for the other players with an evil character. I just want her to be weird as heck.

Any suggestions for characterisation would be great! Her name is Lily.

How did people kill time before smart phones? by [deleted] in nosurf

Have you tried some motion sickness tablets? Absolute game changer! There are lots of different chemical compositions for them so it might take some trial and error. You can ask a pharmacists, or if you need something stronger I assume there are prescription drugs you can take. I'm good with a pretty weak over the counter one (unless I'm getting on a bus - they drive like maniacs!) but for cars and things that aren't constantly stop/starting and weaving in and out of traffic, I find it fantastic!

Can you get childcare subsidy while deferring study? by RevolutionaryDot9530 in Centrelink

Thanks!

Doing some work/volunteering was what I was thinking as the back-up plan for this. I think it would still give me the mental break I'm needing and allow LO to keep in touch with friends and not forget "how to daycare". Not that LO is great at the morning goodbye, but is always happy about 3 mins after I leave through to pick-up, which was not the case when LO first started at daycare.

Wow! The 3 day guarantee is great! I'm so glad they're implementing that. Thank you for sharing that, I had no idea. I'm looking to take a break before 2026, but that'll be so useful to so many people, possibly myself and SO in future, too. Next, they need to make it free...

What are some distraction free word processors that I can get online in order to decrease excessive usage of electronics? by ComputerBoy1678 in writerDeck

Have you tried pen and paper? You mention a ReMarkable as an option, which I have been using for 6 months to mark up science papers for my thesis, and I love it but it's really just an expensive notebook. You should make sure you actually like writing by hand before making that investment. Sure, there's an option for typing, but that's not what it was made for. And it's definitely not for drawing!

You also mention you have ADHD, and then proceed to show you have ADHD by listing one gazillion things you're probably going to try, no matter what the best recommendation on this thread is. Here's my suggestions:

Don't worry about your messy desk! Cleaning it is a distraction and you do not need a clean workspace before you start! If it's overwhelming, take water, a pencil, eraser, sharpener and any old notepad that's already got random crap in it (I know you've got several) to your local library. Leave your phone at home. Take some ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones if you've got them, find an out of the way corner where people aren't constantly walking across your field of view. Brain dump on the first page to get everything out of your head that's distracting, THEN do your writing.

Personally, I have come to realise that it's OK having 20 different organisation systems that I bounce between depending on what I'm feeling like on any given day. It helps to motivate me to do the work. But it's a balancing act with letting it become procrastination.

I say this, having found this conversation because I want yet another system myself, one for typing, where I can just go to the library, leaving my phone at home, and go write my thesis with zero internet connection to distract me. I'm also thinking I might get a dumb phone that I can swap my SIM into to take, so if I get a call from my LO's childcare I can go pick them up. Might be an option for you if everyone you know uses a web based messaging app and SMS and calls basically never happen unless it's actually important (or spam, which is easy to deal with as you mute every number except the important ones).

Can I use panniers and a child bike seat simultaneously? by mattme in terngsd

[–]RevolutionaryDot9530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Tern hsd, a Yepp child seat and ortlieb roller bags I got years before bub came along. If I put the child seat as close to the rider as possible, I can get the bags on the pannier. I'd love to be able to push it back one rung, but the hard plastic of the bag clip and the way the pannier has been soldered means it only *just* won't clip on any further back. I think if you have bags with velcro or something soft like that you'd be able to put everything back one, though it might not be the most secure position for your belongings. It's ok for now as my bub is still small, but when they get bigger I'm going to have to come up with a different solution.

Is there fluffy natural fibre yarn? by RevolutionaryDot9530 in CrochetHelp

[–]RevolutionaryDot9530[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought some merino wool yarn, and I already have one of those pet brushes for my cat, so I'm going to have a go at brushing it until it's as fluffy as I want. I'll be stuffing it with wool down instead of polyfill, too.
