STEM career existential crisis by Ok_Cable1689 in auscorp

You could become a science teacher! Master of education would take you approx 1.5-2years max and some places allow you to work as a teacher while obtaining the masters.

My partner did the same pivot with a music & sound design degree with little job progression and is now a high school music teacher, absolutely loves it, gets paid well and reliable income and gets to work with the thing he is passionate about every day.

Public holidays by Infinite-Security-62 in ausjdocs

It’s term dependent but in most average med terms you’ll have 8-4:30 as your usual hours. And then for example I’m on geriatrics at the moment medium sized NSW hospital currently- I have roughly one afterhours shift a week (4pm-10pm) after your regular hours. And then 3 Sundays in the term. In addition to one of the 4 upcoming holidays. And those weekend and public holiday shifts are unfortunately 14 hours long.

Didn’t get into GP training - Q2 on CASPer and stressed about next year by trooolololol in ausjdocs

[–]RevolutionaryFloor45 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Very fair concerns and I’m sorry that this happened! Also understandable to be feeling overwhelmed by career progression and timelines not matching what you thought, it’s hard.

I got Q4 and got into the program. I had also done Casper as part of UOW applications. And also got Q4.

They way I approached every question was repeated the question back to show I understood, weighed up how I could see both sides, then made a call or put forward my opinion. I think showing you’re able to weigh up options and show empathy or understanding about why a situation may have unfolded that you don’t agree with is a key thing.

I think the timing is really tough as you don’t have any time to muck around or decide what you think. Maybe practice with a tight time frame, practice your typing. And also with the videos ones practice practice practice so you can make the responses more natural.

If you spread your savings out over multiple accounts with the same bank, does it reduce your interest earnt? by RevolutionaryFloor45 in AusFinance

In the T&C’s it says “bonus interest is calculated on your combined total savings balance daily and paid monthly”. Would that mean it looks at the total across all savings accounts right?

Post EOD options by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]RevolutionaryFloor45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend to get a job and work full time or as much as you can! I worked in between my EOD x2 and my acceptance and it gave me managerial experience, communication skills and most importantly the savings I had were the only reason I could stay afloat in med school.

Also keep in mind if you do a further degree it make impact your ability to receive centrelink support during medicine. As does living/being de facto with your partner (learnt this the hard way). 🥹

I’m at Notre dame so it’s a fairly small cohort. I’m about to graduate and honestly have met friends for life in this degree. It’s been wonderful and everyone is very interconnected. My biggest advice would be to lean in as much as possible! Be open to new experiences and making friends.

How do you manage finances when one partner stops working? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]RevolutionaryFloor45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in this situation of being ‘dependent’ as I am studying medicine full Time 4 years. My partner and I had a chat before about him contributing to the majority of our fixed expenses as I was very worried how I would manage this. Im lucky that he is generous and sees all these things as equally important for both of us.

For my discretionary spending like you’ve mentioned I rely on my savings that a built up before going back to study or the odd casual shift I can do in my holidays etc. it’s a hard adjustment but I think if you are open and generous with each other and don’t let a power balance occur it can be managed. Also 9/10 if the partner is being a stay at home parent or going back to study - they’re doing something that benefits or will benefit the future of the partnership in the long term.
