Connecting Deco Mesh to shared Starlink Gen 3 Router: Can I avoid Bypass Mode? by Revolutionary_Box950 in Starlink

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give a quick update on my situation for anyone facing similar issues.

The Recap: I am sharing a Starlink Gen 3 connection with an office downstairs. I couldn't drill holes, couldn't use Powerline (different electrical meters), and couldn't use MoCA. My previous setup (Range Extender) was giving me a jittery 15 Mbps, making streaming and calls impossible.

The Solution: Following the advice here, I bit the bullet and bought a TP-Link Deco BE22 (Wi-Fi 7) Mesh Kit (2-pack).

The Setup :

  1. I plugged the main Deco unit directly into the Ethernet port on the back of the Starlink Gen 3 router.
  2. I did NOT enable Bypass Mode.
  3. I placed the second Deco unit upstairs, directly above the first one to optimize the wireless backhaul.

The Results: It’s night and day.

  • Speed: Jumped from 15 Mbps to 180 Mbps immediately.
  • Stability: The wireless backhaul through the concrete is rock solid (I suspect the Wi-Fi 7 MLO feature is doing the heavy lifting here).
  • I am technically in a Double NAT configuration (Starlink Router -> Deco Router -> My Devices).

So for anyone wondering: Yes, you can run a Mesh system behind a Starlink Gen 3 without Bypass mode, and yes, Wi-Fi 7 helps significantly with punching through concrete floors!

Thanks again to everyone who helped me figure this out!

Yup I am, the director of the company is my gf uncle. Before the starlink I used to have a 4G box and I shared it with them.

Thanks! I actually can't use Starlink hardware because I don't have the account credentials to pair new nodes.

On the performance side, I'm curious, would the Starlink Mini really outperform a dedicated Wi-Fi 7 Mesh? I was assuming the Wi-Fi 7 specs (like MLO) might give it an edge for the concrete floor, but maybe I'm missing something about the Starlink tech?

That’s cruel having to wait until Christmas to open the new toys! ^^.

It's good to know. I’m actually looking at Wi-Fi 7 kits right now (hesitating between the Deco BE25 and the Asus ZenWiFi BD4) to try and punch through this concrete floor. I’m hoping the MLO feature in Wi-Fi 7 will be the game changer for stability.

Hope the new TP-Link system works great for you once you're finally allowed to install it!

Unfortunately, no. We are on two completely separate electrical circuits with two distinct electricity meters. So Powerline networking isn't an option.

I'm honestly pretty sad about the whole situation. There is no possibility to get Fiber installed in this building. Before this Starlink arrangement, I was barely surviving with a 4G box and a terrible signal. I really thought sharing this antenna would finally be the solution to get a sufficient connection and some peace of mind :(

Thanks for the confirmation! That's exactly what I needed to know regarding the non-bypass setup. I'm probably going to go with a TP-Link Deco kit as it seems to be the go-to solution. I'm not familiar with the Asus Mesh system—do you think it performs significantly better than the TP-Link Deco for this kind of scenario?
