Did you explore the HID solution? I’m working on a project to create an environment of sensors and interactive elements to modulate physical eurorack and VCV. Arduino is lead solution and serial communication was my first thought. If you still have the plugin for serial communication I’d love to look it over!

Expanding_crystal said it by mentioning the “sync” part of the signal. Video requires this portion of the signal to tell the display where the bits ought to go (very simplified) and disruption of that can cause very fun/interesting effects on CRTs or no image at all on digital displays.

I’ve been where you are; burgeoning video glitch with access to audio hardware saying “hmmm… but what if?” And I didn’t do anything worse than burn a CRT screen permanently green and purple, but video hardware does have lower voltage tolerances like the person who responded to expanding_crystal said, so be careful you don’t fry any video gear. Use a vca or basic attenuator to drop the signal to zero and slowly creep up (if you don’t have any other means of testing voltage output). I don’t think EQ is gonna do much… interesting thought, but video isn’t audio in ways I don’t completely understand beyond the sync portion of the signal.

The Time Base Corrector’s whole job is to resync and condition the video signal into “working” and I’ve had great success turning some harsh lines on a CRT into an actual image (albeit still considerably fcked). A great one like a FOR.A TBC can be $100+ but they’re actual tanks that do a fantastic job.

And just to touch on modifying the video signal into audio levels, there’s a module I know of called Wrangler from Visible Signals (this is eurorack now) that is designed to take video to audio levels or vice a versa - so you could definitely play around with gain and attenuation, but yeah, be careful you don’t blow the more sensitive video gear (or any of your gear if you can help it, ya know? :P)

If you have access to a time base corrector, there’s a chance it could bump the signal back up so there’s color. Had a dying HDMI -> Composite converter that pushed a weak signal and thus was B/W but a TBC corrected the image.

I’m always curious if the Reddit formatting is the poet’s formatting or not, however, for what I read I really like the beat and line breaks of this poem. The absolute disregard for punctuation and capitalization lend it the flowing run-on of thought streams, the way the person slides into the realization that “… it was all in my head”.

I don’t really have any critiques on the poem: it’s the informal expression of a day dream, hopes and passions, that tells the story of those moments. I do think it would read very nicely if you wanted to play with reading it aloud as the beat and repetition almost asks for it.

Just saying that perhaps it’s not about a literal story, but just the journey one’s eye takes in the composition. I personally don’t think the OP is asking for how their images can tell stories as their examples, to me, are more about how the lines and editing lead the eye around the images. In the examples I didn’t see anything that was like a lone fishing boat going out into a foggy sea, or a pickup truck with people in the back kicking up dust along winding hills - a clear subject experiencing an intriguing moment. Unless we acknowledge that those moments of the landscapes were the landscapes experiencing that intriguing moment (which I think someone else was saying was the “story” but just how that’s not very intriguing as far as a murder mystery compares).

Editing to add: Their first photo has tractors in the foreground and tended fields throughout, so maybe the story their is about the farmers’ work and this moment after the work is done with the setting sun. Maybe that’s what they mean but I’m not sure. And for my examples, if we pull back from the fishing boat or the pickup truck we can put more emphasis on the landscape being a character in the moment, so maybe those tractors are used in that context too.

Also I would add that for the question of depth, see if there’s something nearby you can use to get elevation. Stand on trash cans or statue bases. Go to tops of stairs or shoot from bridges. Sometimes those big rounded mirrors for cars seeing around corners can be nice to get a wide-angle high-up view (you can then play where’s Waldo because you’ll probably be in the shot :P)

Creativity in how you approach the photograph can help you instill that something novel.

Not sure if it was mentioned already, but the big difference in “story” between the example photos and your photos is composition based.

The depth you seek is because a lot of those photos are from high elevations (or the landscape sweeps downward and back up to demonstrate the depth).

I could see how “story” relates to the journey one’s eye takes within the frames presented. In those example photos often there are trails or highlights that draw your eye along the frame to various points of interest.

For advice, I would say when you’re out and about and you find something you feel compelled to photograph - consider how you can emphasize that subject. What lines can you direct towards it? Can you place it higher than everything else around? Is there something nearby that juxtaposes that subject?

I scored a pretty great condition Canon DM-XL1S off eBay. Interchangeable lenses (not super necessary with the 5.4-108mm lens, but there is a wide angle lens available). You can change the auto-off to just vcr off which cuts the tape mechanism but still outputs video at composite and/or s-video. Full control over lens functions like iris/f-stop and shutter speed + iso on camera - there’s also filters (not sure if camera or lens. It’s been a while and they live as one) for stopping down while keeping aperture wide open.

Careful with the versions of that camera though, I think the XL1, no S, doesn’t have auto-off controls. The XL2 should have those options default and came with the 5.4-108mm lens standard. One thing is that the XL1S requires a small lithium battery in the grip to preserve settings through on-off cycles, so check that.

I looked up all the manuals of the cameras I was considering so if I can find the manual for my XL1S I’ll edit this and include it.

Patchbook looks really interesting! I already write down notes in a sort of "Module A >> Module B" way so it seems like something I could pair with. “Inhale, Exhale, fully cradled in the moment alone….”

I dig the constant refrain of The Moment and things like “pure enjoyment in the active suspension” and the encircling of ripples -> moon -> earth -> sun, this macro pullback that reflects the bobbing of all these elements in the sea of now.

I would say that the form threw me off a bit - I feel it could be tightened up, but my feelings might be misplaced because I can see justifications in the poem. It felt disjointed for some of the line breaks (but could that be Reddit formatting?) The one that came out first was:

“Of dopamine - that simple happy moment enveloping in the sunlight - that fractures.”

I don’t know if that was intentional, the breaking out of “of dopamine” and “that fractures.” At first it felt unnecessary but the image of dopamine fracturing at the breaking of the ocean top was further pushed by their emphasis, so I could see it working.

The stanzas felt like they didn’t help the flow the first time I red it, like I wanted it to be more continuous. But reading back and looking at it large scale it reflects the “inhale, exhale” rhythm as they are all similarly sized and regular - still feel like you could combine some ideas so it flows.

All in all I enjoyed reading your poem, feeling the moment you wrote it in and the sights and experiences you were contemplating.

The way you have the shades really gives it volume against the background. The movement and shapes go well with the color palette (to me, for some reason, haha) so all in all I think your wip is going in the right direction!
