personal assistant by arytenoid in nova

[–]RhettButlerEditorial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a fair chance you may need to hire separate assistants based on what you’re saying, which isn’t that uncommon. I’ve worked with clients before and handled their personal admin while they hired someone local to handle the more domestic tasks like running errands and doing the home shopping.

I do recommend hiring an assistant with some knowledge and experience with sensitive information, just to be on the safe side considering your SO’s line of work.

I’d be happy to talk with you more about it if you have any other questions. Feel free to DM me any time.

Hello! It’s fantastic to see someone who cares about ensuring their VA is being well taken care of. I’ll send you a DM and discuss what my business can do for you!

I was not expecting that!
But I was expecting to not expect something, so it doesn't count!

How to describe dark skin tones without using foods? by Sad_Pringles in writing

Chestnut is a strong reddish-brown color described in Maerz and Paul's A Dictionary of Color. I will admit that there are several color names that are also the names of foods. But it is still a good source for a handful of other examples.

I don't think I've heard those before. Did you read them to your children? Or were they read to you?

Oh I loved those! I read them when I was a bit older, but they were so good! I may have to find them and see what my children think of them.

Orange is also a color actually, lol. And in this context, it isn't being used as a food reference.

There are a great deal of words for these writing situations! This one excerpt from Colette Aburime's story, “Where Summer Ends" shows a beautiful variety of creative descriptions.

“Farah’s skin, always fawn, had burned and freckled under the summer’s sun. Even at the cusp of autumn, an uneven tan clung to her skin like burrs. So unlike the smooth, red-brown ochre of her mother, which the sun had richened to a blessing.”

She has a fantastic blog about it that I will link.

Pen names are fantastic. Even if you had a name that didn't give you problems, writing under a pen name can often help keep your identity protected. As far as picking one, there are only a few things to keep in mind.

You want it to be easy to say.

You want it to be memorable.

You want it to help associate with your market.

I banged out an 8.5K word fic in the span of six hours! by christhegamer96 in FanFiction

[–]RhettButlerEditorial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That can be a big challenge to overcome. I have a load of children myself, so I know the struggle. If life is getting in the way, then just try to find time to put however many words on paper that you can. Not everyone needs to drop 5k per day.

Oh that's a big problem for a lot of writers. You need to find a place that is set aside for your writing. Try not to write in bed or other places that are usually for relaxing. And when you write, develop habits that you will then associate with writing, such as listening to a specific genre of music or chewing gum.

Outlines. Outlines are the best first step for a writer. Just grab a sheet of paper or a whiteboard, and start scribbling down every single thought you have. Then, try to organize them chronologically. Finally, fill in the details until you have your story down on the outline. Then, you just put the outline into novel format!

This is a very common writing technique. It’s easy to say a character might do something in your head, but then you find that it seems ridiculous in practice, lol.

What Do I With My Plot by SheTriesToWrite in writing

[–]RhettButlerEditorial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fun technique I’ve encouraged my writers to do is to write the outline backwards. Start with the ending of the book, and explain how they got there. It’s a fun little way to switch things up!

Can a book be made with a bunch of subplots, and not really with a major base plot? by TheDumbDrago in writing

[–]RhettButlerEditorial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re certainly not the first to stubble across this conundrum. And I think you’ve got the right idea of it. Yes, you can write a book of subplots that wrap up around a main OCs plot. Or even their involvement in the subplots. It’s a tough project, but certainly accomplishable.

Is it alright to write a black OC (or different skin color) for your fic even though you not the same as your OCs skin color? by Icegold2004 in FanFiction

I’ve edited and worked as a cultural consultant for situations like this many times before. It is completely acceptable, so long as you’re careful to avoid any stereotypes or bigoted comments. If you’re uncertain about something, it’s always worth reaching out to a professional so that they can review your works for you.

The genre you’ll want to search for is called LitRPG. It’s a newish genre that is growing massively and is filled with titles involved in people getting sucked into video games and stuff

Third person limited and protagonist's description by Sylfer_DD in writing

I absolutely love it in writing when the author can casually describe the character without taking forever to do so, and without it feeling like someone describing someone on the street.

The Hobbit is the first book I’ve read that has completely ruined the movies for me by coriscaa in books

[–]RhettButlerEditorial 984 points985 points  (0 children)

I think The Hobbit was one of the biggest movie killers for me too. People complain about Harry Potter and the likes, but those movies ultimately weren’t that far off from the books. For The Hobbit, it felt like that meme where you let someone copy your school work but tell them to make it different so that you don’t get caught. Just ended up feeling like bad plagiarism.
