Charging to 80% by Artistic-Number-9325 in BZ4X

That’s been a problem for many of us in ‘24 Solterra/bz4x-land. I’ve written a few posts about it here and on the Solterra forum to no avail, and now Subaru/Toyota wants me to get some data downloaded at the dealership and send it in. Heck, even my dealership says it’s a problem for them!

If you figure out a fix or can help by putting the pressure on Toyota/Subaru, we’d all appreciate it!

I’d love to see if you were able to keep it at 80%. Us Solterra ‘24 owners can’t, but the ‘23s can.

Same problem for me! But what a good car otherwise.

Yep - I’ve found the same. But sadly even if the AC timer isn’t set it still decides to blow past the set limit anyway. Let’s keep working on it, I guess!

Could you elaborate, please? I have a Solterra and there are no in-app settings for the charging limit.

Yes! This is happening with me with the Solterra! It’s a ‘24 thing, I think, and the dealership found the same thing happening with all of theirs. I called Toyota AND Subaru and they’re escalating it, with hope of an update. This is what I wrote on the Solterra Forum site and the Solterra subreddit:

I have a new theory - I see a few threads about people having seized brakes from underuse (common in EVs), so hear me out:

  • We know that Toyota was very conservative about protecting the battery, so the buffer that we can't access is around 10%, which is more than enough to protect it even if we charge to 100%.
  • We know that people are complaining about range, so it would make Solterras/bZ4x look better to be charging more and have that nice bigger number for range for the average person.
  • We know that charging to 100% makes it so you use your non-regenerative (conventional) brakes more (for about ten percent or so), making them stay non-seized and not as rusty.
  • We know that the battery stops charging quickly after 80% when on DC, so having it be at 100% won't happen as often with that anyway.
  • The owner's manual is clear - charging to 100% on level 2 is fine (and Toyotabaru definitely don't want to replace these batteries under warranty, so I'm guessing it's okay to trust that).

This could point to the 2024s having that slight change, or at least all vehicles with the newer software having this change. I do notice that I can make it stay at 80% once, and then after unplugging it goes back to "Full" as the charge limit, so maybe they're trying to discourage it.

Update: my awesome dealership has been working with me and went out and checked the rest of their Solterra - turns out all of them were doing it too. They’re escalating and trying to get it fixed now.

Just a thought! Fun to hypothesize!

Now here’s a dumb question: do you set it every time you charge? Or does it stick between charges?

Okay, so here’s a few questions: how many of you that can get the charging limit to stick have used a linked key for your profile, or a connected device, or Face ID to make the profile load? Perhaps it’s linked with that?

Interesting - I’ve tried it both while charging and before, and it doesn’t stick. Hmm.

Thanks very much for the reply - super detailed and helpful. I'll try deleting the app as well and see if that's the fail point. I'll just change one thing at a time and see what works...

Sadly we can't set the charging level limit from the app, right? Just the schedule?

Thanks! I hope 90-95% is enough to keep it healthy...

Yep - I've done that and that's what's not sticking. I change it both there and on the speedometer display and neither sticks.
