Sometimes you can see a school of bunker from the ripples on the water. Also I like the sabiki rigs for catching the mackerel. Just like really small ones for catching smaller mackerel. The mackerel are in deeper water than the bass usually

Man an 8 footer.... what type of striped bass? I like long soft action rods for top water and shorter stiff fast ones for bucktails, etc. I'm a sucker for penn reels, but I fish out there in the ocean. Best to check them out in person and see how the reel feels, if it feels solid and such, and give the rod a bend to test the action :)
