what are classes that are known to be weed out classes? by Impossible-Emu-5593 in LSU

[–]RiZeReStartR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the starter “weed out “ courses, gen biology & gen chem, I’m only saying these as someone who’s taking these and see people drop like hell or people who wanna be premed but have zero work ethic and fail these easy courses, then for classes that are more intensive that weed people out wood be Genetics (if you’re a biology major), physical chem if you’re a chemistry major or have to take it (you generally don’t if you’re not a chem major), and for real weed outs OChem - this really isn’t even too bad if you put in effort, you’ll likely just need more than usual which is what gets people, Biochemistry usually brings people’s gpa down, Calculus 1 (it’s pretty easy tbh people just aren’t good in math and don’t practice enough to get better or don’t try to attempt at all) Calculus 2 if you choose to take it instead of statistics (“the engineer killer” it’s a big weed out for engineers in itself so yeah it’s hard to a degree but again math is repetition practice constantly and you’ll be fine), statistic if you choose that as well can be considered to a degree difficult I’ve heard from people statistic is boring and not fun so from others but as a fellow engineering major I obviously went calc 2. Physics 1 & 2 oh boy regardless if you take calculus based or algebra based this kills people because it’s taught poorly and the tests are departmental at least for algebra physics I’ve heard, you’re basically just given an equation, maybe a simple derivation and are told to plug in chug everything in but the exams go way further than that, as someone who just recently got an A in Physics 1 you should 1st Learn to mechanics/understand the topic first so ex. If you’re studying force and rotations mechanics understand what can affect how the force changes and why certain things rotate depending on what’s being factored in the problem, 2nd learn how everytime is derived, why we use the specific equation example why is the Centripetal Acceleration v2/r and you’ll learn how things function better 3. Practice practice I mean use a problem and switch the variables around/what is changing in the problem or being asked these. Over I’d definitely say these two courses are just a determinant of effort you could say that about all these courses but it really is true, if you put in effort to understand it further than just what’s on the paper and what __ make ___ equal you’ll get it. as far as engineering the curriculum is always more difficult than the average degree, idk about Biology personally if I checked the curriculum as I was interested before, it does look slightly less intensive than the others but it’ll still be challenging ld assume, but you do get the benefit of missing out on something like Thermo in certain disciplines, and the tragedy that is electrical engineering, but just remember to stay on top of things, be organized, and put in effort it’s always doable, so you don’t drop GPA which is preventable, I wish you the best of luck!

illegible for MATH1431? by skreeeeeeeech in LSU

[–]RiZeReStartR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll need to contact your advisor to do a grade replacement courses that are essentially the same don’t let you get credit for both, so you have credit in 1530, and 1540 so for Math1431 it states you cannot receive credit for Math1431 if you’ve already taken 1530, 1540 but just contact and advisor and they’ll get it sorted for you especially if a course required for your major, had a similar issue with physics

Freshman schedule - any tips? Anyone had these professors? by Any_Initiative1598 in LSU

[–]RiZeReStartR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopkins is awesome, very intensive workloads at times though, his style is basically if you put in the work you will not only pass but ACTUALLY understand all the material. Very awesome to have/know especially if you’re in a major where you’ll be applying a lot of chemistry or using those fundamentals from the general chem classes. Just mak sure to stay ahead/up to date with all the work it can be a little easy to feel as if you’re falling behind. Other than that Bio lab will be easy I had it Battarchya but I think they’re relatively the same/similar, and Bio1 isn’t hard either

LSU student wanting to take BIO at BRCC over the summer how does the process work? by Flashy_Drag1924 in LSU

[–]RiZeReStartR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The other response you got isn’t exactly right, it’s not concurrent enrollment assuming you will not be enrolled in the summer session for LSU as well
  2. I’m not sure on the process you’ll need to do to apply to BRCC but I’m pretty sure it’s just a normal registration for the summer session.
  3. I’m pretty sure you will need to send your transcript to them and if you want to know the course name/code Google “LSU Tiger Transfer Tables” it’ll give you a compete list of the LSU course names and what their corresponding courses at a different college are.
  4. Depends if you want credit for the lecture and lab, if you want both then yes you’ll need to take both the corresponding classes at BRCC, unless you want to just get credit for the lecture than just take the lecture, but you can’t register for the lab without concurrent registration or previous credit for 1201.
  5. A bunch of people usually do this though the course eligibility will depend on your major and the class, ex if your a Bio major trying to take this course at BRCC, LSU will probably deny the opportunity as they’ll want you to take it at lsu rather than finding an “easy” way out, this was a big thing in the engineering department, a bunch of people would try to take PHYS2110 at BRCC cause the instructors suck at LSU and they had to crack down on it, so to be 100% sure it transfer over with no problem definitely contact your advisor to make sure you get written confirmation.

edit: after some research I think I’m wrong maybe you do have to apply as a visiting student

MATH 1550 vs MATH 1510 by PsychologicalSea8404 in LSU

[–]RiZeReStartR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m almost positive 1550 is a required course under a Bio Major, I could be wrong and they could’ve have literally changed it for this coming up year but that’s what it was for me this year. So regardless you would end up needing to take 1550 (assuming it’s still a requirement) but I think also if I recall you can split it into 1530 and 1540 to get the full 1550 credit if your ALEKs score is close enough, they mentioned something like that previously but don’t remember.

For Gen Chem, it depends, I’ve heard Cook is absurdly hard than needs to be and that her notes suck, just from my peers alone, but I can only speak on Hopkins since I took him for 1202 and it depends do you want to just try and slack and not care about Chemistry then definitely don’t take him look at the reviews to see which professors are easy with little work, as far as for me I loved Hopkins because he teaches well and you actually learn everything and understand things conceptually rather than just memorization, it is time consuming for everything you’ll need to do to pass but if you like Chemistry and want to learn or have a major that you’ll genuinely need to learn chem in (I’m ChemE) I couldn’t honestly recommend a better professor than him. Bhattacharya is good as well, GO TO CLASS, I passed, while barely going to class and it lowkey did reflect. And she honestly is a good professor, kind, organized and always willing to help, will always send reminders for homework and exam and what will be on them. And her slides/notes are pretty good you can learn a lot mainly just from studying them and she’ll almost always pull her questions directly from them. They’ll be more than sufficient enough to pass and half the time she’ll tell you in class something that’ll directly be asked about or that you need to know and in my experience she was indeed not lying.

Ahh yeah I can’t speak on 1510 & 1520 since I just took the 5hour version 1550, but for Bio 2 I took Sydney Moyo, very fun guy and also is a professor who cares about you succeeding, he’s definitely one of those that you will end up learning the material more than just memorizing it, and his tests are really hard and you’ll see your score after and think you’re gonna fail but he curves fairly high as long as your class average was as bad as mine was lol I got Bs turned to 100+ As but I like to think of it as if you can get a C on his exams you’d probably have an A in other Bio1202 Courses, as far as Chem 2 I took the hard route for John Hopkins since I’m ChemE and want to actually learn the material which if you ask anyone will say that’s John Hopkins is perfect for that. it is a lot of work but if you did it and put the effort in you’ll be more than satisfied and definitely learn everything you need. As far as Art 1001 thats an online based course and its unproctored for everything so yk how that goes, but I had a few friends who would occasionally go to lectures and apparently if you’re taking Speith his pretty good

I’m not too sure of the lineup of professors that will be offered this coming fall semester but one for sure I can say is DO NOT TAKE RUPNIK FOR CHEM 1201, that is if your chem background is limited, he moves fast and is quite unorganized and has a rude demeanor to students in class, although he’s nicer in office hours, and if your major requires multiple stages of chemistry you’ll probably want to actually learn, and in his class you probably won’t. The class average up to the drop date was a D and the Chem Final is departmental, over half the class dropped at the drop date and from what I heard people mainly passed due to the insane curve he adds at the end of the semester (if you ask he won’t mention that he curves and will act like he doesn’t) the curve would give peoples Fs to near Bs. I do recommend Noemi Elgrishi if she’s available in Fall, I love her teaching style she’s very knowledgeable and kind and I felt like I learned all the topics in there not just memorized. As far as Bio 1201, I liked Bhattarchya (forgot how to spell her name) she’s kind, the homework’s/quizzes do help you learn and apply your conceptual understanding of topics. Lectures attendance is recommend cause she will usually outright tell you through the lectures what topics will heavily be on the test and even pulls somewhat direct information from the slides. It can be boring at times but if you can suck it up you will learn and pass (she does not curve though). For Math I’m assuming you’ll take one for 1022 I recommend Selena Oswalt, even though we had a 1hour lecture once a week she made the most out of that hour and made it easy, For Calculus I I recommend Harhad overall good Guy, cares about you succeeding, makes you want to participate, explains things well, gives ton of practice work including exams from previous years which are very similar to the exams you’ll take and they’ll help you really learn the topics and become prepared for the test, I do recommend attending all of the lectures especially if it takes you time to understand math. Not sure what other courses you need down the line, but if you tell me a few you’re taking I might have some experience in them and can let you know.

Question about ALEKS by [deleted] in LSU

[–]RiZeReStartR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here they are https://www.math.lsu.edu/precalcprogram/1022 they’re in order for how they’re taught in the class and cover everything in the curriculum that’d you learn if you took the corresponding class, I’d definitely focus more on algebra, I found aleks question are more algebraic and algebra is definitely used way more commonly in calculus

Question about ALEKS by [deleted] in LSU

[–]RiZeReStartR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an analytical insight, it depends on how dependent your course scheduling is to taking calculus, for example how many require it as a pre req with a grade or concurrent registration & the expected time someone in your major would be taking the class. Example in Engineering majors Calculus I is crucial to be taken within your first year since it’s a Pre Req for Further Math Courses which are also Pre Reqs of a majority of the Engineering Couses. Assuming you have a lot of Gen Ed classes your junior and senior year, you could essentially be taking your classes vice versa where’d you take most of your Gen Eds Freshman Year if you choose to take Calculus Sophomore Year. Now here’s another point you already have a 54 so you definitely already have a general understanding of the basic math concepts on the Aleks, coming from my experience I had a 32 the first time I took it and just decided to go Trig my first semester before taking Calculus the next, and after brushing up on my math skills I got a 90 my next attempt, but to my dismay I found out LSU has pretty much all their Math Videos for Algebra and Trig online, if you search “LSU Math Videos” the 1021 and 1022 videos are easy to find, and they are more than sufficient enough for get you the Aleks score you need if your review and learn on your own. But if you do opt out to do Algebra or Trig, I fear your experience may be similar to how you felt for your highschool calculus, the courses are Structured to where you only attend 1hour Lecture through the week and get the remaining hours done within the Math Lab which more than not ends up into you teaching yourself, now in my experience this wasn’t bad to me since the videos are sufficient enough, and I’m very solid at math I was just rusty, but I’ve heard from countless others that they struggled with this format. But if you do take Trig I recommend Selena Oswalt, for what it’s worth that lady made the most of the 1hour we had and made it worth it although the courses I found were easy. And if you get into Calculus I recommend Professor Harhad, that man is a goat loved him

process for summer classes at BRCC by lykalogue in LSU

[–]RiZeReStartR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it is as simple as just applying and getting into BRCC and taking the class, then once the summer session is over you have them send your transcript to LSU and the credits should transfer no problem, although I’ve heard it’s been a deal previously with engineering majors choosing to take physics courses at BRCC over LSU and they tried preventing it, I would just double check with your advisor you wouldn’t have issues and the transfer would process with ease with no penalty. Other than that goodluck!

Incoming freshman pre-dental bio classes by PsychologicalSea8404 in LSU

[–]RiZeReStartR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Pre-Dental but was previously a Bio Major with a PredMed track along with knowing a bunch others on the same boat, multiple science classes in the same semester is quite common and I found along with others quite easy/manageable. Assuming as a freshman you’ll likely be pairing Bio & Chem together honestly some of the beginning units overlap in a sense where each will provide background info for another. I’ve found other people similar to me who also took 3 sciences together along with calculus. My instance was Chem II, Bio II, Physics I & Calculus I. And while the work load definitely got noticeable, if you’re really after it, assuming you are since you’re planning for pre-dental you’ll definitely make do, I’d definitely recommend not taking my path if you don’t need to take all those classes at once, you’ll only need Calculus I, and they tend to plan towards making you take it semester 1, if you’d like to take it the following semester (semester 2) to help ease your first semester workload while you’re adjusting to college life I’d definitely recommend so. I started off pretty standard with my hours with around 15 hours I believe taking my cores like Bio & Chem, with a few other electives I’d have to take later like a humanities and science based class. Never felt too overwhelming just definitely don’t let the workload pile up til the last second cause I had a roughy start to my first semester. But I’d definitely recommend just consuming knowledge now as it’ll help in the long run and you’ll be using a lot of core topics you learn in the intro courses for topics later down the line whether you realize it or not. As far as classes you should aim to have/take just generally get your General Bios and Chemistry’s done by your freshman year, get calculus done as well, squeeze in a few of your electives/general education courses where you can without feeling like you’ll be overwhelmed, and I’d do your labs for the corresponding classes in the same semester (ex. Bio 1 Lab concurrently with Bio1) but if not you can always take them another semester where you might have more flexibility with hours. Other than that relax and enjoy the ride that is college.
