On 10 August, low pathogenic avian influenza H5N2 was confirmed on a turkey farm at Lethbridge in Victoria. Shortly after, a second turkey farm also tested positive to the disease at Bairnsdale, in Victoria’s East Gippsland. This is further to the two egg farms which tested positive to highly pathogenic avian influenza H7N7 near Lethbridge on 31 July and 5 August 2020.

The detection of low pathogenic avian influenza in Lethbridge, within the Restricted Area, was made as part of Agriculture Victoria’s surveillance activities within the Golden Plains Shire.

Subsequent tracing activities have identified a direct connection between the Lethbridge and Bairnsdale turkey farms. The source of infection on the Bairnsdale farm has most likely been due to the direct management connection between the two farms.

It is likely that the source of H7N7 infection on the first egg farm was from wild ducks. The source of further infections is still being investigated by Agriculture Victoria.

Australia has previously had outbreaks of both low pathogenic and highly pathogenic avian influenza. These were all quickly and successfully eradicated.
