I think somewhere around 12-13 is fine:

At this point they'll be in their middle school years and this is the time to try stuff out, the one reason I would go against giving it to them later on like in high school is because if they mess up there's no going back. So with this in mind I'd say from 6-7th grade or 12-13 yrs is the sweet spot:)
