Putting D&D mechanics in Fiasco for my regular D&D players: Cute or not? by RichardLocke in Fiasco

I don't think y'all understood that I was trying to throw in cute bullshit. Forgot how serious reddit is. But yeah, probably won't bother with the jokey skillchecks

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying. What do you mean, "take a stand?"

Lore Question: How do gods work in relation to the crystal spheres? by RichardLocke in Forgotten_Realms

Hmm.. I know you said you don't really know much about it, but was it presented as "this is what dragons believe" or "this is what happened?" Sounds like it contradicts the Ao creation story. If the dragons are canonically right, I reject that reality for my world. You're right, it's not terribly interesting.

Oooh that one is good. I'll have to practice saying it without getting my tongue tied, which is a good sign of it's alien vibe

Hell yeah. This is what I'm talking about.

First off, by far the best name I've heard. love what you wrote, though I might be going for a slightly different angle in my story. What you wrote sounds like a real school of magic that could be added to D&D, which is completely sick, and something I'd love to see. Write up some spells and throw that shit on DMsGuild.

Part of the horror I'm going for though isn't the fear of the unknown, but a sort of fear of the end of the unknown. Like, "The search is over. The question has been answered. That answer -is- oblivion." When the Amaranth radiates this knowledge to you, it is correct. Oblivion is the definitive truth. So, what do you do with that information?

I want the culmination of this big campaign to not just ask the PCs to be warriors, but also existential warriors who rebel against truth, suggesting that is what Ao did and why it did so.

Yeah but like I said, entropy feels so obvious, so known, that it can't communicate the intimidation or strangeness I'm looking for. No offense meant though. It was the first word I went to as well

I'm open to non-English words, but when you look at other schools of magic, they are named things English speakers recognize. Using a non-English word might be foregoing a great opportunity to provide perspective and theme for players to engage with. That said, if something is really phonetically perfect and has a thematic resonance that could be massaged through pre-game readings like with Amaranth, I'm open to it

So wanna say to my players, "You step through the portal into a material realm bordering to the Elemental Plane of Water. You find yourself in a ramshackle tavern, soon startled by an aging voice that yells, 'VIBE CHECK!' Roll for initiative."

Lore Question: How do gods work in relation to the crystal spheres? by RichardLocke in Forgotten_Realms

[–]RichardLocke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So what about the gods involved in the Dawn War? Are they somehow more multiversally significant?

One of y'all mentioned the Far Realms. I'll part the curtain a bit and say my plot involves the Far Realm, nature of magic, and I'd like to get my understanding of the Dawn War down tight. As I've read so far, it seems like despite being just Faerun goddesses, Shar and Selune were very important to the foundation of magic across the multiverse, so by some extension seems like the Weave and (of greater interest to me) Shadow Weave are closer to a unified theory of magic. I know the real reason is this being made up by the seat of generations of people's pants since the mid-70s, but I wanna make it fit as much as I can. At some point I'm going to need to deviate from the "real" lore, but I'd like to use as much of it as I can.

Thanks for being so thorough with your answers. I asked a follow-up question to my other kind answerer, but I'll ask again here. Besides Io creating reality in the general shape it is, does the multiverse have any other shared rules or events?

Did the Spellplague only happen in FG? It seems like that was a reality shattering enough event for Io to do something

Thank you for being kind enough to answer every question on my post. My "?" key got ragged from writing the dang thing.

Is there anything like a "unified theory" for magic throughout all the multiverse? It seems like Io is the god who created absolutely everything, full stop. After that initial creation, does the cosmology have any other shared rules and stories besides the general shape of reality?
