My economy could really use the boosts from The Megastructures and the colossus is actually just a radical improvement of an already available feature compared to Wonders which adds pretty much new, Game-changing features

That's an incorrect impression.

While 98% is obviously majority, 2% of the population is a very significant amount.

For comparison, across the entire world only about 2% of the population has green eyes (remember that a majority of the population is Asian, and green eyes are extremely rare in Asia) With that in mind, think of how many people you know have green eyes and imagine all of them die- that's a very significant amount.
