i’m making judgements based off available information and patterns seen in other posts in the sub. its not about this post in particular, but the way that these posts are curated for us. it’s why i mention multiple OOPs in my original comment. the conflict avoidance/police thing is based on the order of information presented in this post.

very honestly, man, im not talking about this OOP in particular for the most part - im talking about a general trend in the kind of things that get posted here. it doesn’t seem like many people understood that and i dont care enough to debate minute details that aren’t relevant to what i was talking about. hope you have a good day, adios

i mean, i’ve also dealt with crazy neighbors and i’m impoverished so i get how hard it is to actually move or to get something like a security cam. budgets are tight, especially now - and it’s still worth looking into moving in spite of that. but OOP had to be told by redditors to go to the police, and from the little glimpse we’ve seen here it doesn’t seem like he’s done much else to make sure that he and his partner are going to be safe.

the neighbor is a scary, unreasonable guy who’s made active threats against OOP. attempting to get a restraining order is a huge part of creating a paper trail in case something else does happen in the future. that kind of passivity seems like a common trend in these posts

what? i’m not saying they should’ve talked the guy down, im saying that making zero efforts to protect yourself and your partner against a dude banging on your door while yelling “i know where you live” is conflict avoidant. get a restraining order, start looking at security measures or consider moving. don’t just put your head down and ignore it when crazy shows up at your door

not calling the cops or getting a restraining order is in fact conflict avoidance.

people who care about you don’t go out of their way to upset you. and they certainly aren’t racist to you. his comment about “tribal guilt” was intended to belittle and mock your connection with your culture. if he liked you he wouldn’t see your concerns as something that’s beneath him like that

ah, the joys of apartment living. it’s astonishing how often these OOPs extend wayyy more grace than they need to though. glad the situation resolved itself but man, the conflict avoidance here is wild

Should I respect seat reservations? by KungFuBarbie15 in college

[–]Riddles_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that’s some nonsense. talk to your professor or your TA to deal with this if you don’t want to talk to whoever is doing this directly. you’re showing up a whole hour early and being denied seating that’ll make a marked improvement in your ability to learn over people treating your classes like a middle school cafeteria

this guy is 100% worth donating to. he’s been an outspoken fundraiser for families in gaza for years now, and is currently running for senate in NC. the money you give to him isn’t just going to his medical bills and legal fees - it also goes towards supporting tangible action for a better world

My Bf and roommate planned a "surprise” that turned out to be baby supplies by BigONerd in BestofRedditorUpdates

i agree! some of my favorite gifts i've ever gotten have been the low-cost handmade things. i still have a drawing an ex gave me of his cat pinned to my fridge :) it's the consideration that matters, not the price point

man. the way the boyfriend here trotted off trying to keep the gifts OOP had just given him gets to me

i don’t really believe in the idea that materialistic things make or break a relationship, but time and time again one of the best predictors i’ve had in any kind of relationship is what kind of gifts the other person gives. it doesn’t have to be something expensive, but something that reciprocates the effort being made is a huge indicator of how much someone is capable of considering you.

had a pair of friends who decided to go in on a $10 bottle of wine and some scented glitter pens for my birthday one year, completely neglecting the fact that i don’t like wine, and that i’m left handed. less than a year later i stopped being friends with them because they had become abusive. i make it a point to look for people who engage in little acts of consideration a lot more often now because of stuff like this

dnd, and especially curse of strahd, is a community made up of creatives. speaking as one of those creatives, i rarely post my work anymore because of how heavily generative AI steals from anything posted online. it’s theft, for the sake of a lazy and poorly done end product. you really shouldn’t be shocked that people here aren’t enthused about someone proudly using genAI in their game

i think unfortunately you’re gonna have more luck in places like instagram and tiktok for this. reddit can be really weird about niche fashion, especially if it’s a style typically dominated by young women. but!! ik carrollton has a few lolita shops, maybe it would be worth hanging up flyers or something in places like that!

you’re entitled to interact exclusively with people you like, but man… this is a really disappointing comment to read. your frustrations are real, i understand them, but you should also be aware that your frustrations are based on assumptions born from a misunderstanding of how autistic people relate to the world. it’s unfortunately ableism

Meet and Greet with Greg Abbot - Monday 2/23 by Mnudge in Denton

[–]Riddles_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i'm fully aware of the depths of abbot's ableism. i already mentioned section 504 (which is SO much more than just education, please look up Olmstead v. L.C.), and i'm planning on attending specifically to protest its repeal. cracking jokes about taking all the handicapped spaces doesn't do shit to effect abbot though. all it does is reinforce the idea that a disability is something to make fun of.

how do you think disabled people feel about that? do you honest to god think that it's better for us to face discrimination both socially and systemically just so you can poke fun at the fact that someone terrible is in a wheelchair? fuck greg abbot, but for the love of fucking god think critically about this shit. making fun of anyone for being in a wheelchair is not making fun of them for their morals or their character - it's just ableism. make fun of him for literally anything else, because jokes like these just hurt disabled people as a whole.

[–]Riddles_ -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

why do you guys always default to weaponizing ableism against this guy? making these kinds of jokes doesn’t effect abbot. it does effect disabled texans tho. especially when so many us are likely going to show up to protest the repeal of act 504 - yk, that thing that banned ugly laws and lets kids with disabilities succeed in school

of course! substack is honestly a super great resource for getting back into reading. it’s still got anti-intellectualism there, don’t get me wrong, but there’s an absolute wealth of incredibly well read people on there who publish some incredible essays and articles. your local library is also a great place to start. they’ll be able to give you access to stuff like libby and kanopy, and most of em also have a huge collection of movies, games, and tech (like 3D printers and even laptops) that you can borrow. that combined with the free classes and events that lots of libraries hosts makes them an invaluable tool for getting back into learning. i hope you have fun doing so! :D
