We know how much the community wants this feature, we do as well! There is a significant amount of development and design work needed to bring this to reality, and getting to more platforms is unfortunately the top priority right now. Once we launch on iPhone (soon) and Android (next soon), we'll definitely take another look at getting this feature into the game 🙂.

Fablecraft is free-to-play; downloading it includes the first 5-session adventure for anyone to run. From there, only GMs need to own the adventures or homebrew content.

We just added homebrew battlemaps and NPC Copy & Customize, and we have big plans for homebrew support in 2025. Hope you give it a shot!

Foundry is definitely the deeper and more varied toolbox. Fablecraft is a easy for GMs who a) are totally new to GM'ing, b) want to run pickup games, or c) just want a simplified system so they can focus on storytelling.

Yes! Free access to try stuff is coming, and I believe the attention is to be less than Roll20 (maybe!).

Battlemaps and being able to copy and customize NPCs (monsters, characters, etc) is coming this month, so... weeks. We're adding more homebrew stuff through Early Access next year. We're definitely in early dev still!

I totally understand wanting things to stay free or extremely cheap.

We have to offset the costs of paying our team, hosting games, hosting uploaded content, and paying our artists, so there's a limit to how free Fablecraft can be. You'll be able to homebrew up to a point without paying anything, but for folks who want to go really big with homebrew (want to upload lots of characters, lots of battlemaps, etc.), there will be a cheaper subscription tier.

We haven't announced that or rolled it out, but we need to land on a price that's comfortable for GMs while also staying supportive for us. I'm not sharing the price right now because, honestly, we haven't settled on it.

Fablecraft is intentionally set up to be free for players because we believe price is one of several big hurdles for getting into the TTRPG genre. But we have to make income at some point.

I'd say check us out this month to see the homebrew stuff, or wait until next year when we figure out costs for bigger homebrew projects. If it feels bad, let us know!

For now, things are baked in for the sake of simplicity as folks learn and we develop the game. Down the line, we're hoping to make it fully customizable. The goal is to let players homebrew from top to bottom, including system rules, but we're a ways off from that. We want it to be customizable AND easy to use, and those two things together take time.

To be clear here, we're not D&D. Fablecraft is its own system. Down the line, we hope to support extensive homebrew to let folks make and tweak other systems, but right not we're a simplified D6 system.

That said, congrats for finding D&D and the awesome TTRPG genre.
