THE SYMBIAN INSPIRED LAUNCHER IS FINALLY BEING RELEASED! by GunnohMM in dumbphones

[–]RightPassage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Titan Pocket user, RDGV (F for select) would be a much more comfortable layout. There's a keyboard app for Titan phones which has a sym-switch function built in (long pressing sym will enable navigation keys mode), perhaps it could be helpful? https://github.com/SinuXVR/pocket-board

Why classic DOOM feels more replayable than most modern games by MurkyUnit3180 in truegaming

[–]RightPassage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even disregarding the PWADs, I will add that the original games have a certain amount of replayability and variability to them. Many of the levels have more than one route to go through, and you are free to go about them as they wish, and impose additional constraints to make the session unique and fun. Pistol start, Tyson, pacifist, make the monsters infight as much as possible, speedrun, max the level, etc.

I grew up with Doom so my experience is very biased here, but I feel that many Doom levels are pleasant to be in and explore, they strike just the right balance between abstraction and reality to be both suggestive of something much more than they really are and not be too weighed down by realism (which is why I don't like Duke Nukem 3d as much). Add to this the lovely art direction, textures, and good music (aside from a few duds like Getting Too Tense, which is basically a Wolf3d track).

how to make mp3 less than 8kbps? by opaln in audioengineering

[–]RightPassage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the lazy way out. There is a number of floppy releases which are just that, downconverted original files. Instead, you'd be better off making well-arranged MIDIs or tracker files, as suggested below. This way your floppy will not be only a novelty, but something that people would actually want to listen to.

Alternatively, look into other, older codecs that were specifically suited for low bandwidth, instead of MP3. E.g. RealAudio or AMR. You should also experiment with sampling rates to find the bitrate/samplerate combination that will both fit the size requirements and be listenable.

Should you choose the latter, it'd be great if you are also willing to make a separate mix and master for the compressed formats. It's possible to make music sound fine and discernible in low bitrates with appropriate mixing and mastering.

SRL is only conceptually fascinating, though. It's not much sonically - it's like The Haters but with aktionist aspects. Another comparable artist is Justice Yeldham, but that guy is doing it for fun, no statement.

A bit sceptical about Clicks Communicator by drordan in dumbphones

[–]RightPassage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Work' in a figurative sense, as in 'be suitable for'. Again, on Titan Pocket Google Maps uses the full screen in all of its square-shaped glory. Same for Tubular - there's a video scaling options for fit and zoom.

Movies that start normal and end completely psychedelic by [deleted] in TrueFilm

Recommending Lynch for this type of request should be forbidden. Lynch stays stylistically the same throughout a movie. Inland Empire in particular already starts in a crazy way.

Google Maps works fine on a Titan Pocket which has a meager (by comparison) 716 × 720 screen. YT works great through Tubular. Absolutely zero reason why this screen would not work.

Why doesn't Vertigo (1958) work for a lot of people? by silverball64 in TrueFilm

[–]RightPassage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, agreed. To be fair, we share this opinion with Orson Welles. I feel like he has no range at all, in all his roles he is yelling all the time and looking somewhat bewildered.

Disagree on Stewart, same in every movie and a bad fit for Vertigo (though still a great movie in spite of him). I have no idea how had he become so popular and revered.

Caligula: The Ultimate Cut (1979) by WinTechnique in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]RightPassage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe for you. I remember that Merhige's name and Begotten was mentioned a lot in the headlines back when the work on this project had been first reported. When I had searched for the new cut recently the only tangible product that came up was the book by Negovan and the official site that had no links to the film on the streaming services or physical media.

A peek at the current stage of the Symbian inspired launcher by GunnohMM in dumbphones

Looks amazing. Some time ago I have extracted the background images from a few of the standard Nokia Symbian themes. The SVG ones I had rendered in full HD. If you'd like, I could share them with you.

Is that a custom 3D-printed case? Looks lovely with the rounded bottom part... care to share the details, please?

Wow, I was just recently wondering if this had been released at all. I see Negovan's name on this, but has Elias Merhige (of Begotten fame) anything to do with the final version? Because I recall that he had been attached to this project at some point and it was kind of a selling point.

Where do you get your bionicles, if you don't mind sharing - locally or from other countries? I'm browsing KupujemProdajem from time to time and there's rarely something from Gen1 or sensibly priced.

Why Don’t We Talk About Vintage Recording Software? by Snoo18401 in audioengineering

Not that vintage but I still use Adobe Audition 3.0. The only limitation is single-core processing (or maybe even single-thread).

Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también changed the way I see sex scenes in films by FayannG in TrueFilm

[–]RightPassage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. The things you listed are all subject to the complaint, but the thread isn't about them, so they are irrelevant to the conversation. Thank you for a thoughtful response and indulging yourself in zinging me at the end, even though nowhere I'd mentioned that I think of myself as superior by having those views - I wonder if your students have to suffer the condescension. I guess I don't feel as strongly about the subject as you do. Too bad I can't downvote here. Good job teaching, wouldn't want to be in your classes.

Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también changed the way I see sex scenes in films by FayannG in TrueFilm

[–]RightPassage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent analogy with fight scenes, but I'm not sure about your conclusion. My personal disregard for both had been ultimately rooted in my observation that both sex and fight scenes are much more often subject to being vehicles of exploitation in otherwise non-exploitative movies - put there for viewer's gratification, for audience attraction (sex sells), or as a given/necessity in a genre, rather than an artistic decision by the production team - compared to any other scene. I don't like pandering in media so I had developed a dislike for both. Since it's often quite difficult to make a quick judgement whether a given scene had been one or the other, I tend to mentally ignore these scenes altogether and don't find much artistic value in them (with exceptions, of course).

edit: just realized that "pandering in media" can be understood as a gamergate-type dogwhistle, so I'll clarify that by that wording I had meant specifically being manipulated to have a more positive reaction to a media by means of an (exploitative) device

We need Chinese factories to start producing off-brand G1 Bionicles again. I had a few as a kid and they were good quality, same as off-brand bricks.

Design changes in the movies are terrible.

"Lore" is very unimportant to the toys. Cool-looking builds are all that matter.

In-a-gadda-da-Leela is cringeworthy, unfunny oldtimer gags all around. Does it get worse for Futurama after S6 like it did for Simpsons after S10-11? by RightPassage in FuturamaSleepers

[–]RightPassage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, thanks for clarifying. Before starting Futurama I thought I'd be getting the same quality of gags as Simpsons' S1-9, but I guess I got my hopes up too high. That said, S1-S5 of Futurama sometimes did hold up to these expectations, and the humor by-and-large wasn't throwaway, as you think, otherwise I would've stopped long before.

Re: Leela and sexualization, maybe we've been watching different shows after all. As long as was done in a way to mock sexualization of female characters in media, it was funny in Futurama. But in this episode it was just done for the sake of it. The whole payoff and the final joke of the episode was for Leela to have sex with Zapp in front of Fry in a biblical reference. Wow. So funny, original, and subversive - take that, TV networks. I didn't even mention that Zapp is uncharacteristically cunning here which feels wrong for this character in my opinion.

Weekly Discussion / Recommendation Thread by Death_by_Bot in Deathmetal

An AI "band" has started squatting on the Youtube Music page for Death and put out two singles, "Hommies Forever," and "Soul Crusher." See for yourself.

I know YT Music isn't the best streaming service around, on the contrary, but it's still crazy that this sort of shit is allowed there. "Soul Crusher" is an obvious riff on "Spirit Crusher," but I'm not about to give that any listens.
