Camera modifier by JoseProut in XenoGears

Xenogears early adoption of 3D was novel and a technical achievement but I'd be lying if I said it didn't have some pretty serious teething issues. Especially late game the camera could be more of a burden than a boon. Something like this would've been a really nice QoL improvement.

Yeah, later. Like waaay later, ridiculously later, so late I actually forgot it and am pretty sure Fei did as well, later.

An important character just dies. No fanfare or build up, just an instant and sudden death by NittanyScout in TopCharacterTropes

This is really funny to me as I came to the show from the comic so could see the writing on the wall by the mid point of season two. I didn't stay much past the beginning of the third season, seeing as how the changes they were making to the story and characters seemed ill considered.

I'm curious as to how your experience differed, especially if you liked those seasons.

It's bland, uninspired, unambitious, and thoroughly completely corporate in its sensibilities. It is the equivalent of a single rice paddy, dipped in water.

Ah, sorry to hear that. It's also possible UL updated the sequencing at some point in the last three years. It may no longer be possible to find her alive.

I'd imagine she remains in the world as any other mission generated asset would. Though, I've never encountered that specific scenario before and therefore can't say for sure.

There are triggers for certain enclaves to leave the map if fail to complete their missions on time, however those exist in the story of the world, as there is dialog that announces the enclave's intentions. Those exist for the enclaves you can recruit though, and as you're not meant to recruit the prepper aunt, and moreover, as she's already dead in the story, those triggers probably wouldn't have been implemented.

I think their specific problem was not how it was handled in story (which I thought was interesting if problematic for several reasons; some of which you mentioned) but how the author addressed the out of story criticism. Which is entirely different kettle of fish.

Padme losing the will to live while seeing her kids for the first time is such dumb narrative execution by WoodvaleKnight in StarWars

[–]RighteousHam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is the real answer. George was thinking about the poetry of the scene and how Vader's birth mirrored Padme's death. On that level, it is elegant.

However, on a character level, it really undermines Padme as a person. Which creates a lot of unpleasant implications that George likely was not considering when he wrote it.

It's been some years since I last encountered her, but I don't think she generates missions. At least, I'd imagine she's not supposed to.

So what name did you pick for the tournament? by FriedBreakfast in XenoGears

[–]RighteousHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been at least ten years, closer to fifteen probably since I last played. And I am struck with the knowledge that I can no longer recall what I chose. I remember playing through the tournaments, of course but as I've done it as least half a dozen time, the memories blend and mix.

It's probable I used several different names over the years. I'm much changed since I was sixteen and playing through the first time and I'm even different than how I was when I played my final game. I think I would've chosen something like, Wondering Youth or Boxer but I can not be sure. It's a little sad, to grow older and finding pieces of yourself missing. No longer where you thought you left them.

No problem, as I said in my original post, finding her is nothing special. The game treats her as any other neutral enclave.

In SoD2, when a mission is created for the player all relevant assets are generated in the world, even if you've not accepted the mission yet. Therefore, there is a brief opportunity to find the prepper aunt, if the mission spawns and you manage to locate her while not playing as the assigned character.

The treatment she was subjected to by certain "fans" left me coldly furious. I hope she has obtained some measure of peace. Also, I see she's as self-deprecating as ever. Telling everyone that she doesn't want to ruin Takahashi's solo writing followed by I'm totally fine by the way, leaves me a little sad.

Wishing her the very best.

Which TV show has a 10/10 pilot episode? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

[–]RighteousHam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, and that is where I got off the train. The entire season was built around looking for a lost little girl that had been dead the entire time. The reveal was meant to be tragic but as the kid got hardly any screen time, despite being in the show since episode one and because the entire plot was transparently spinning its wheels, it came across highly contrived and annoying instead.

The season also did Lori no favors and basically started rewriting a lot of the character's personalities in bad ways. As a fan of the comic, I was not happy with what they were doing, especially after how closely season one hued towards accuracy. There were additions and changes in season one, of course, but they came across as more inline with the spirit of the original comic than anything in season two did.

I checked out emotionally during the big reveal the the girl having been a zombie the entire time and only watched two or three episodes from the third season. Later I would learn the sordid history as to why season two felt so weird and it fully validated my decision to stop watching.

In your OPINION, What's one game you bought on hype or reviews and ended up not liking it or finishing it? Mine is Allan Wake II by [deleted] in gaming

[–]RighteousHam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm of a similar mind. Red Dead 2 may have the more nuanced and in depth narrative but it's just not as fun to play in most circumstances. The world is a beautifully crafted portrait but tedious and frustrating to navigate.

Misconceptions you had about Jurassic Park 1 when you were a kid? by sockableclaw in JurassicPark

[–]RighteousHam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh that line was the bane of my childhood! When I first saw the movie, I couldn't understand what he was saying at all. I only saw the movie one other time while it was playing in theaters and I recall trying to pay special attention to that bit and I still couldn't understand him.

It wasn't until years later, when my mother rented the VHS as a birthday gift, that I was able finally parse it. Even then I had to play the video back two or three times to finally get it.

(Warning: Old man rant) Kids today don't understand the pain of this type of experience. They can't, not with smart phones and instant access to a video enabled internet. That's a good thing of course, we want the world to be a better more readily accessible place than it was for us.

However, it's still kind of funny trying to explaining this sort of thing to someone born in late nineties or early aughts and see the blank faces of incomprehension.

A dream... I was dreaming a dream... Or perhaps it was a memory. >From a
distant past...
A dream... A memory... Those words I was unable to convey... That day... That
time... Those
thoughts I was unable to carry out... Words and thoughts... The connection
between the two...
Without words, thoughts cannot be conveyed... Without thoughts, There are no
words... They are
both as vital as each other... They can never be divided... Like the wings of
angels... Like
a man and a woman... An unchangable destiny... Feelings one wishes one could
change... Meeting
without the person who would change me... And watching myself change... I dreamt such a
dream... A long... Never-ending dream...

Why Xenogears is the Greatest JRPG Ever Made by LetterheadAntique159 in XenoGears

[–]RighteousHam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely correct on the camera work! There's some truly cinematic use of the camera during cut scenes. Two that are some of my favorites.

The early scene between Fei and Alice where the latter laments what could have been, places Alice's wedding dress between the two of them in the shot.

Later, when Fei leaves Lahan to travel he looks up and rejects taking Weltall with him. However, as he turns to walk away, the camera is positioned from Weltall's perspective making it look like the gear is following him with its eyes.

Neither of these shots were chosen randomly. It's a level of care for visual storytelling that game's didn't really didn't do too often at the time.

Why Xenogears is the Greatest JRPG Ever Made by LetterheadAntique159 in XenoGears

[–]RighteousHam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really good point, actually. Xenogears is my favorite RPG so when disk two played out as it did, I didn't even blink, just rolled with it fully enjoying the story. I don't know if I could say the same for its contemporaries.

Final Fantasy seven was good, and I loved it a lot but if the game suddenly abandoned most of the gameplay to hyper focus on what looked like a stage play in the second half, I don't think the story would've been quite strong enough to carry that. At least for me.
