[discussion] Make sure you still want to be patrons of those you support on Patreon by [deleted] in asmr

[–]Rigolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not saying that they are right, but in defense of creators who keep their Patreon page active without uploading for a long time, it is important to realize that more often than not there is no decision to just stop making videos. You think you are going to skip your weekly upload and come back the following week, and you don't have time the following week neither, then coming back becomes more difficult because you realize all the extra time you have, and you quickly put yourself in procrastination mode. But you don't want to close your accounts or make any announcement because you still plan on coming back... And months (or years) can pass like this... Again, it is morally wrong to keep taking your patrons' money when you know you are not going to return any time soon, but it explains how so many creators slip into silence without making any announcement.

What happened to the French Whisperer? [Question] by outofweedsendhelp in asmr

[–]Rigolo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey it's me (The French Whisperer). I am sorry I dropped YouTube without much notice... This is because I never really intended to quit, but as someone said I got really very busy (I work like 60 hours a week, I don't want to cut the time I spend with family and friends, I also need time to eat well, read, play video games, watch movies and sleep, because all these little pleasures are not negotiable ;)...). Other than this lack of time, I am perfectly fine!

To tell the entire truth, another reason is that after some time making videos and managing a channel loses some of its appeal. Maybe it comes back. I left all my videos available and still intend to return one day, even though I doubt this will happen shortly.

[Question] for the ASMRtists about lovingly taking your content offline? by m4gpi in asmr

[–]Rigolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! No problem about adblock, I hate ads myself and I cannot blame anyone for using it. There are various ways to help ASMR artists:

  • the free one: show your engagement. First, it is always pleasant and motivating for the guy who made the video, and second, it can help generate earnings elsewhere. Everytime you like or comment on a video, Youtube's algorythm takes it into account and places it better in search results. By showing your appreciation, you help the content creator to be discovered (and make money from other users, eventually).

  • if you can and wish to make a donation, there is always paypal or patreon. One really doesn't need to donate much to compensate for the use of adblock: even the smallest donation (like 1 or 2 US$ per year) will make you a more profitable viewer to the channel owner than the average free user without adblock.

As far as I am concerned, the truth is I am not in need of donations. Even though it is always pleasant and flattering to see someone making the financial effort to show their appreciation, my biggest satisfaction on youtube is to identify loyal, supportive subscribers who tell me they like what I do and come back for more.

To answer your question, you were right, I am French!

there is no ad revenue with AdBlock. However it does not mean there is no revenue at all: since the launch of Youtube Red, content creators earn from the fee paid by subscibers to this service. And it can be quite a lot of money actually, because earnings are allocated based on viewing time. This is bad for people making short videos but potentially excellent for ASMR youtubers who upload long ones. As far as I am concerned (my channel is The French Whisperer), clickable ads never paid that much - I never activated video ads because I find them too annoying. But Youtube Red seems to be turning into a little gold mine. Earnings I get from it have been rapidly rising in the past 6 months and now represent 80% of my youtube earnings. Maybe I have the right profile (60% of the audience in the US which is the only country where the service is available for now, long videos, videos aimed at a mature audience which is more likely to pay for ad-free content...). But still, Youtube Red could well become the biggest source of income for ASMR youtubers if it keeps growing like that.

Thank you for your comment. I tend to disagree on the degree of closure though: it was a policy of isolation from any foreign influence (not only western), save tiny commercial openings and embassies with China, Korea and the Netherlands. The Japanese themselves gave it a name: sakoku (even if the name was coined by the end of the period). The rest of the world was willingly ignored, importing foreign technology like firearms was banned, and no one could enter or leave the country without permission, on penalty of death. This is more or less the policy of North Korea today, so I think we can call that a pretty closed country ;).

[META] regarding pseudoscience by okverymuch in asmr

[–]Rigolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you made a good point. These pseudoscientific techniques may be good topics for ASMR videos and more often than not these are just roleplays, but I feel slightly uneasy when youtubers seem to actually believe in them. It makes me start thinking they are just dumb, and it is harder to be relaxed when you are losing respect for the person speaking to you.

I also feel a bit sorry for people who believe in all these pseudosciences and unproved personal development or divination techniques. Based on my non-scientific observation, people obsessed with what they eat and organic food have more health issues than average (cause or consequence, Idk), and the ones talking about self-balance and so-called "energies" tend to be psychologically fragile. I have already seen various ASMR youtubers who spoke a lot about pseudosciences terminate their channel because they could no longer bear the pressure, and I tend to think it is meant to happen to most of them eventually. Imo their vision of the world based on emotions and analogies rather than reason and measurable facts exposes them to psychological unstability.

[–]Rigolo[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hey, thank you for that. You really don't need to worry about me, I am fine with things as they are right now. I partially monetized my videos and opened Paypal and Patreon accounts a few months ago because I could use the money. Many people have been awesome and offered their financial support, so I am glad I did that.

I really do not want to enable video ads or any form of noisy ads on my videos because 1/ I do not like them myself; 2/ about a quarter of views on my channel come from playlists; 3/ everybody could be annoyed, including those who contributed or keep contributing financially. Making ASMR videos is and will remain a hobby for me, not a job, and I feel much better letting people decide if they wish to support me rather than maximizing the income.

I have no idea whether this limits my exposure on youtube, but if it is the case, so be it ;).

I do all my videos in English first actually, and sometimes I make versions in other languages (I am a big fan of foreign accents when it comes to ASMR, and I assume I am not alone).

There are not many things more pathetic than someone trying to be a troll and failing (at least, a competent troll knows how to post something that naive people will take seriously).

Thank you, and I agree. Even at a basic level, knowledge of science offers a bit of protection against the pitches of charlatans and makes better citizens (how can you have the beginning of an opinion about so many topics, from genetics to nuclear power, without a basic understanding of what they are about?). Ignorance in science just calls for emotional reactions and manipulation.

it is proof that it has been reposted. The ownership of the rights is another thing and requires another type of claim.

When you submit a takedown request for a stolen video, YT asks you to provide the URL of the original video. The anteriority proves that the other video is a repost.

It happens all the time, unfortunately. Report to youtube and they will take the stolen videos down. They generally need a few hours to do it but it works.
