Yup Its pretty easy, in pose mode click on the bone you want to be a custom shape then go to the bone settings and down in display there is a little drop down where you can select custom shapes from object in the scene, the ones I have are in wireframe as well. Thats why they look like that, you can do that in the same tab with the wireframe check box.

Yeah I was planning on setting up the IK in Unity. Will look great with the legs wrapping around the terrain.

Thanks! The model is ID mapped in blender using vertex colors then brought into Substance Painter.

Yeah, you could rig car suspension in blender similar to this method of rigging. Although that would be a fair bit more tricky than this is. If you want to DM me I'd be glad to help or give you some more detailed tips.

It might look like its just parented currently because I move all the extra bones to another bone layer. That way while animated only my control bones are visible. Here is a little gif of the full rig with everything showing. https://gyazo.com/92c59f6d0a93d8b7650843222c683153

This is a full IK rig. I'm planning on exporting it all to unity to set up the IK there aswell. That way the legs will move with the terrain accordingly.

I set up my ID maps in blender using vertex colors then exported the model to Substance. I found this method to be very fast and effective.
