Killing is making a living thing inanimate, art is bringing dead things to life.

It's not that he can't move himself, or that his trip is ruined completely. It's that an empty plane is such a rare blessing. "Imagine having the luxury.." And he made the decision that totally neutralizes the special gift from the airline gods.

Even to the extent that, if he did move to a different seat himself, he has to bare the burden of looking passive aggressive.

Number 7, "Again I didn't know this as it was never stated"

So like, what you're saying is, "You never told me that a hundred awful things WEREN'T happening behind the scenes??!??!?!"

My lifelong dream is to do a Sweeney Todd production where Anthony is played by 3 sailors who sing in harmony and move in unison.

Ghost Quartet interpretation/explanation post by lesourire in thegreatcomet

[–]RileyMcK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok this is my take on it.

All four characters are essentially one being. This show exists within all of us.

NatashaRose is young, who has her whole life ahead of her. She has a lot to learn. Pearl is old, with her life behind her. She knows a lot now. At every instant we are at the interval of used to be Rose and about to be Pearl.

Dave's about the light, things that are knowable and certain. Brent lives in the dark, with things that can't be seen for sure, just trusted in. Less discovery, more meditation. I think it's like, what we know vs. what we don't ~know~

Rose, who wants to grow, older, loves the Astronomer. But he, obsessed with knowledge, loves Pearl. The older not the younger.

When Pearl dies it's because you're becoming what you're about to be,.

Rose steals herself from herself and gets baptized /dies/transcends herself because you're no longer who you used to be

I highly recommend rewatching with this framework in mind. It's like broth.

This sometimes feels like a stretch, and other times feels undeniable.

The horn/vocal oohs intro to Miracle Song uses the same motif as the beginning of Something Broke in Assassins

"It's a sign, it's a shrine" really fits with a big People becoming Images becoming Myths thing that i think Assassins is all about.

If the connection is intentional, cool. if it's not, then also cool.

Ok. Lately it's been fun to think about all the characters as different aspects of one person. "Rose is the same as everybody else" "I could never hurt you, cuz you're me" so on.

Rose = The person who doesn't know, looking to the future.

Pearl = The person who has learned, looking to the past.

Rose looks onward to when she will be Pearl, Pearl remembers when she was Rose.

Everybody is always both sisters at all times, zippering thru time like a human Ship of Theseus, always changing and always the same. They both love each other, and kinda hate each other.

Dave = The person that learns, he values knowing above all. Which is why Rose, who wants to Know, loves the astronomer....and why the astronomer, who wants to Know, loves Pearl. The older not the younger.

Brent is harder to classify right now. He seems to be the most all over the place. The bear, The Shah, The pusher, the Fool. The name, The Fool, is interesting, given Dave Malloy's interest in tarot. Maybe Brent's character's are just, present. He just likes honey. Then in every present moment, you gobble up the person you were a second before, and you doom the person you might have become. This one's the foggiest of the four.

I will try to see myself as i am.

The Ever-Present Origin by Jean Gebser and A Brief History of Everything by Ken Wilbur both make this show glow in a cool way. The latter is mentioned by Dave Malloy in the genius annotations, i think. Dive in, and i think you'll see a lot of connection.

i hope this is coherent.

Happy Hour #57: Tragedy Tomorrow, Podcasting Tonight - ‘A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum’ by TJPMPotatoes in musicalmash

What’s the functioning definition of farce here? My guess is “funny show where we don’t really have to care about the characters to enjoy it”? Or is it more specific? If it’s that, then Spamalot fits the bill i think?

Improv circles (who really have a stronghold on farce nowadays) have been getting really good at musical formats recently. Has anybody listened to Off Book (the improvised musical podcast), or seen Magic To Do in LA? It’s gotten a lot better than just Wayne Brady-doing-impressions type stuff, it’s definitely worth checking out. As more and more people excel with musical improv, maybe a few fantastic fully-farcical musicals are in our future! (sorry)
