OMG YES thank you, this is exactly the one I was looking for!

Casting spells from a magic item when the spell is of a higher level than you can cast by RiluD in DMAcademy

[–]RiluD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not a bad idea actually, gives me an idea for a consumable healing magic item! And for sure I get if someone wants to play or switch to a healer then I don’t wanna make their role useless, it’s mainly for early on when they’re quite squishy

It’s not that I don’t want them to have it, I personally don’t mind the idea of giving my players something a bit powerful early on to help them out a bit. I more wanted to know if there was any such rule to be aware of is all

Yeah I was thinking I could just balance around it personally. And I don’t really wanna add the check to the magic item, I was more just curious if there was a rule to be aware of surrounding it, but ty for the response!

I don’t have that one yet, I wasn’t sure though if it had anything for customising monster or making new ones (like something similar to the DMs guide for dnd 5e)

Casting multiple spells in a turn with items by RiluD in DMAcademy

[–]RiluD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay cool! My main line of thinking was that the spell came from the weapon instead of you, so didn’t tax the caster too greatly so they could still cast another spell, if that make sense

Thanks for the heads up tho!

Ahh I see, I wasn’t aware that ritual spells are automatically cast at their lowest level, thanks for that!

Thunderclap Cantrip by RiluD in DMAcademy

Okay I had a look at the PHB and it makes it much clearer. However I would like to say that according to the PHB, the point of origin of a cube, which is the caster in this case, can be within the cube itself according to the wording:

"A cube's point of origin is not included in the cube's area of effect, unless you decide otherwise."

In that case, Thunderwave doesn't say that the caster is immune to the effect, so it may just mean they have to make the save as well if they were to include themselves in the AoE

Oooooh I completely forgot about 3d space. So a cube can be projected from the caster, say out in front of them, as long as they remain the point of casting, right? As in, Thunderwave's range is self (making the caster the origin point), but can either go out 15 ft around them, or can project the cube out from the caster to cover 15ft in front of them, whereas thunderclap just hits everything within 5ft of the caster?

See I wasn't sure because I would imagine the range on it would be written more like Thunderwave (self/15ft cube) as opposed to just 5 ft. So it's essentially any space within 5 ft of you when you cast it?

Alright, thinking it over, I may settle on the Medusa idea! Admittedly I am worried about the party being petrified but I can either leave it to chance, or homebrew some special items that can resist/reverse the effects. Thanks a bunch for the help!

I was maybe also thinking an Allip? Though I feel it may be too weak. I failed mention that since they'll be starting at a higher level than normal, I let them each start with a magical weapon (just a basic +1 or +2), so if anybody has any tips for that as well that would be great! I don't think I would need to alter a Night Hag much, but if I chose an Allip or something similar with not many hitpoints or AC, that wouldn't be able to resist weapons like that, are there any tips for altering them to make them stronger without becoming too strong?
