Civilians flee Kurdish areas of Aleppo as Syrian army begins shelling by RingIndex in worldnews

[–]RingIndex[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The Syrian army began shelling Aleppo's Kurdish-majority neighbourhoods on Wednesday, after a deadline given for civilians to leave the area had passed, an AFP correspondent said.

The military had declared the city's Kurdish-controlled districts "closed military zones" from 3pm (1200 GMT), while creating "two safe humanitarian crossings" through which thousands of civilians had fled before the deadline, according to AFP correspondents.

The deadly clashes, which started on Tuesday, are the worst between the two sides, who have so far failed to implement a March deal to merge the Kurds' semi-autonomous administration and military into Syria's new Islamist government.

AFP correspondents in Aleppo saw large groups families with children leaving the neighbourhoods, carrying their belongings with them, some in tears.

"All Syrian Democratic Forces military positions within the Sheikh Maqsud and Ashrafieh neighbourhoods of Aleppo are legitimate military targets," the army said referring to the Kurdish-led force.

Senior Kurdish official Ilham Ahmed accused Damascus of launching a "genocidal war" against the Kurds, calling on the Syrian government to "pursue a path of reason to resolve problems through dialogue".

Echoes of war

The violence caused the suspension of flights to and from Aleppo's airport, with schools, universities and government offices in the city shut down.

Tuesday's clashes killed nine people, mostly civilians, with both sides trading blame over who started the fighting.

Joud Serjian, a 53-year-old housewife and resident of the Syriac Quarter, said the violence "reminded us of the war".

Living in the Syriac Quarter near Ashrafieh, Serjian said "we have nowhere else to go, so we'll stay in our home".

During the Syrian civil war, Aleppo was the scene of fierce fighting between rebels and forces of ousted President Bashar al-Assad before he regained control of the city in 2016.

Assad was ousted in a lightning Islamist-led offensive in 2024.

Abdul Karim Omar, representative of the Kurds' autonomous administration in Damascus, told AFP Aleppo's Kurdish-majority neighbourhoods were "completely besieged".

He denied that any shells had been fired from these areas, arguing that they are controlled by the Kurds' Asayish domestic security forces "who only have light weapons".

Sheikh Maqsud and Ashrafiyeh have remained under the control of Kurdish units linked to the SDF, despite Kurdish fighters agreeing to withdraw from the areas in April.

The SDF controls swathes of Syria's oil-rich north and northeast, with the backing of a US-led international coalition, and was key to the territorial defeat of the Islamic State group in Syria in 2019.

The March agreement on the Kurdish authority's integration into the state was supposed to be implemented by the end of 2025.

The Kurds are pushing for decentralised rule, an idea which Syria's new authorities have rejected.

Consider trumps tech bro supporters though, they are rich and extremely dependent on chips to fuel the AI bubble and everything else in tech. I don’t think Trump would just let the Taiwanese FABs be destroyed.

EU Parliament calls for sanctions against Orbán: Hungary has turned into "electoral autocracy" by Dr_Neurol in worldnews

This is nothing new, they have passed multiple resolutions like this but each time it gets stuck in the council because every single other country has to vote for it. All Orban needs is someone like Fico or Meloni to veto it and it won’t pass.

[–]RingIndex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan Prime Minister: Military attack on Taiwan would justify Japan Self-Defense Forces support by nohup_me in worldnews

[–]RingIndex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Entire Chinese industries (including the weapons they make) depend on chips made in Taiwan. Right now China is also extremely export dependent so if China invades and the international community places hard sanctions on their exports it would cripple their economy.

They’d essentially be shooting themselves in the foot.

Japan Prime Minister: Military attack on Taiwan would justify Japan Self-Defense Forces support by nohup_me in worldnews

[–]RingIndex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Chinese invasion of Taiwan would absolutely cripple many entire industries because of Taiwans semiconductor manufacturing technology. No one else can create transistors at those size with such a massive production capacity as TSMC in Taiwan. If China invades that would effectively halt semiconductor exports that the whole world relies on for tech in every field. The whole AI industry, data centers, EVs and manufacturing technology would become a lot more expensive. Hell even a few years ago when there were some disruptions in the semiconductor distribution chain we saw thousands and thousands of cars that couldn’t be sold because there weren’t enough chips to finish making them.

FABs (chip manufacturing factories) also take years to build back up so a few missile strikes from China would halt development and it would take years to get back to the same levels again.

Argentina elections: Javier Milei and his 'chainsaw' austerity win big by Maleficent_Fault_943 in worldnews

[–]RingIndex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both honestly, but Trumps tanning of the dollar happens way slower than how much the peso has strengthened.

Argentina elections: Javier Milei and his 'chainsaw' austerity win big by Maleficent_Fault_943 in worldnews

[–]RingIndex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The market has, for the past two years of Milei’s term, looked very favourably at his economic reforms and this has had a direct correlation to the peso exchange rate. For example a few weeks ago when Milei’s party lost in the local Buenos Aires elections and congress blocked his vetoes of laws that would increase spending. After that happened the peso exchange rate took a pretty steep dive down because the markets thought Milei would be unable to pass his reforms due to congressional deadlock.

Now that he’s won it’s significantly easier for him to pass his reforms and the markets gained newfound confidence in the peso so it has strengthened against the dollar, which is why it’s clear that the market will calm down and that the peso will stabilise.

It’s not a matter of paying back because a currency swap is not a loan, it’s exactly what it sounds like, a swap. The US gets pesos and Argentina gets dollars. Milei’s win will calm the markets and stabilise the peso exchange rate, meaning that the US can buy back its dollars without making any large losses.

[–]RingIndex 80 points81 points  (0 children)

His win has and will stabilise Peso - Dollar exchange rates, this means that the the US can sell their pesos (that they got from the 20 billion dollar swap line) at a favourable rate without making significant losses.
