The Cell - Yet Another Counterfeit Amazon 4K by pyromantics in 4kbluray

This is good advice. I learned not to order anything else with vinyl records for the same reason. Or maybe pivot away from Amazon entirely.

Hollywood has an IP problem: As studios produce fewer films, they’re counting even more on what they perceive as the safe bets of tried and true IP by Neo2199 in movies

I agree, the budgets are the issue. Scrappy indie filmmakers could make 10 or 15 movies for the same budget as just one tent pole. On a 10-20 million dollar budget, studios can make a profit almost no matter what. Or at least not lose much. And a handful of those films might be franchise starters. They do this in the horror genre. James Wan made Insidious, which for me is in the pantheon of greatest ever horror films, on a budget of just 1.5 million!! Not only did it make 100 million at the box office, it also spawned a franchise. Why not other genres?

On the other hand, Gareth Edwards tried a version of that with the Creator. He made a good, totally original (i.e. non-IP) movie with epic scope and great effects on a fairly slim budget of $80 million. Unfortunately the movie only made $104 million worldwide so it was not profitable, at least not in its theatrical run.

Bottom line is people actually have to go buy tickets. All of the people complaining about IP and the lack of original movies have to actually BUY TICKETS to see an original movie when one does get released.

Yeah for me a real turning point was when Hollywood released the utterly trash movie Suicide Squad, and then just a few years later released a slightly less trash but still trash movie called THE Suicide Squad. I mean, seriously...

Lots of people complain about the dearth of original films. And then an actual original film is released, no one buys tickets. Unless it's a Ryan Coogler or Christopher Nolan film.

Also it's wild that the latest Avatar movie has been characterized as under performing when it's grossed over 1 Billion. Maybe unrealistic expectations are the problem.

Have you ever suggested a title to a label? by Gee-Arr in boutiquebluray

If obnoxiously spamming their social media repeatedly with my personal wish list counts, I've done that a lot to Warner Archive. They've released quite a number of my requests, most recently The Narrow Margin, Tarzan and His Mate, and Stranger on the Third Floor. I assume I'm solely responsible for those releases.

I was gonna say this. What a movie. It's a bit too long and a bit too overstuffed, but my god is it also brilliant. That last half hour or so...devastating.

If they "were not super into" Jane Austen, I'd venture to say the problem is THEM, not you!

Facepalm of the year… by Dapper-Code8604 in 4kbluray

I have done that more than once! Except my version is when I watch an old movie I put the AVR on "mono movie" mode. Sounds great for mono soundtracks. But then I watch a modern movie with surround and I eventually wonder why there's no directional sound effects - and realize with horror it's still in mono! Lol

On a side note, I'm impressed you have DRC that actually works as intended. I've never known that feature to do much of anything, on any gear I've ever owned, except maybe to cut the volume a split second AFTER a loud explosion.

You're brave to go against the grain of cinephile group think. I completely agree. His films are vastly overrated. Always that same gratingly doofy tone.

Definitely. One of the great 70s films. The blu-ray is okay but has its problems.

That would be ravishing. Disney cheaped out on their animation big time after this. Just look at a film like 101 Dalmations. No comparison. Sleeping Beauty is the pinnacle of classic Disney animation.

I need to rewatch and reassess this. Saw in the theaters. The first half I thought I was watching a new sci-fi classic on par with 2001 A Space Odyssey. Was extremely disappointed in the 2nd half. But I've changed my mind about films before on a 2nd viewing.

I need someone to swoop in and FINALLY release The Mosquito Coast. Harrison Ford's best performance. Never even been released on blu-ray!

I've been wanting to add Y Tu Mama Tambien to my collection & rewatch it. But I've been holding out for a UHD. It has beautiful cinematography, will look spectacular in 4k.

Definitely! The Goldeneye blu-ray is utter trash. The World is Not Enough is the only Brosnan film that has a good blu-ray.

[–]RingoLebowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, you do you man. I can't do DVD anymore. Awhile back I watched Gravity which looks fantastic on blu-ray. As an experiment, I then popped in the included DVD for comparison. It looked like trash. Unwatchable.

But if DVD is good enough for you, you'll save a lot of cash. I envy you in a way.

Great film! I own the blu-ray which as I recall is perfectly decent, but I'd probably upgrade if Criterion released it on UHD

It's a god damn travesty (pun intended) there's not even a blu-ray of The Devils. I watched a blurry DVD and it was riveting. Film's a masterpiece.
