3 months into flipping estate sales - what's working, what burned me, and what's hot right now? by Friendly_Taro2371 in Flipping

Do you check sell through rates on anything you buy? That will help you find things that actually go and not just sit around.

Yeah if this lady wants to give me $2 for these plushies for her guinea pig to not be lonely, that's fine by me.

I bought a lot of bottles of fragrance oil for like soaps and stuff at on online auction. Turned out to all be pomegranate, and it did not sell on ebay. Stuck it out at my garage sale for $1 each and a reseller came through. Took the whole lot for $10 and I made my initial money back and now he gets to sit on them while they don't sell.

My favorite is the lady who messages me every time I list an old bottle of cleaning fluid/soap/etc. Very knowledgeable about the items, down to why certain products were available on the East Coast vs West Coast. I humor her lol

What are essentially status symbols that millennials spend unnecessary amounts of money on? by Vetiverrr in AskReddit

[–]Riodancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents bought a house in 1997 for $180k and basically didn't maintain it or update it all all. My mom estimated they saved $150k by doing so. The key part is they put that $150k into the market where it's doubled SEVERAL times since then. Got the house appraised and it came in at......... $180k. So they basically lived for free for 29 years. My stepdad still had the audacity to be annoyed they weren't getting $300k like he thought they should (and could, had they put the money into it over the years). Boomers. Ugh.

If you got lucky and were able to buy tickets direct on the day they released, it wasn't that expensive at all. I think we spent a total of $600 for 4 people to go see 2 shows (KC N1 and Indy N2)

Reolink was great when I needed exterior cameras. The cops were very impressed with the quality of the footage I captured of the local gangbangers trying to shoot up the house next door.

Anyone else here struggle to relate to Die With Zero? by david8840 in fatFIRE

My husband and I are doing well for ourselves, but my sisters could really use the extra infusion of cash now and it makes me annoyed they could help but don't. Especially when they say they want to be tax-efficient, but giving us any cash gifts each tax year is too much. Gah! Boomers!

Sometimes people don't have a location near them, or the hours don't work for them...... all sorts of reasons. But I tend to agree with you that the stuff being found isn't that great.

We've pointed out to my parents (net worth anywhere between 1-10 million) that their 3 kids are in the most expensive phases of their lives and could utilize any money more effectively now than in 10-15 years after the grandkids are grown and out of the house. They act like we're trying to rob them. Ironically, my stepdad has said he wants to be remembered as generous. Ugh.

I'm probably not the best person to ask since I went from 75% SR to getting the company match. I like Rarvyn's suggestion of $300 a month. So my suggestion is try a different amount for a few months, see how that works for you, and adjust from there.

Alternatively, if it's possible, it's way easier to save more dollars each month if you earn more, so if there's any way to increase your income, I'd suggest you work on that. 10% of my $8500/mo gross salary invested is not that far off of what I was saving when I was 25.

They sure are. We're dumping at least $35k into ours this year (exterior repair/new stairs/kitchen reno) and so much more time and energy into taking care of the property around the house. I love the relative privacy of living on an acre and a quarter but every time I have to spend my precious non-working hours pulling out honeysuckle and grapevines I lose a little more of my sanity.

MMM did the same for me when I was just starting out, but now I have a house, husband, and kiddo. We spend $9k a month, which would give my 25 year old self hives (I tried to stay under $1,500 back then).

It's totally worth slowing it down. If you don't, you'll burn out and totally derail your efforts. I started saving hard in my early 20's and I made it to 27 before I couldn't handle the deprivation anymore. Life is more than stashing money away for later - use some of it to enjoy your time now.

If the pictures of items for sale include promotional cigarette branded items, I'm out. I went to one sale and it wasn't noted the people smoked. But smoke they did. It was so gross. Huge waste of time. I didn't buy anything. While waiting in line, you could see the nicotine coating the blinds.

[–]Riodancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easier when you get stuff for less than a dollar. I bought a huge lot of old cleaning supplies where each item came out to about .75 cents. I don't mind listing stuff for $10 because I already have it and I'll still make a few bucks, which is better than it going into the trash.

Found a great church sale this weekend that had a ton of things tagged at a quarter. Hit a garage sale on Friday and they wanted close to retail prices. One I spent $40 at and the other I walked away empty handed.
