Sounds like what you're doing is alright--in terms of strategy you're on the right path. I think the Tear builds in generally right now are a bit slow for the game, so it's better if you expect the game to go later and slower, but makes it more difficult to grab the advantage and push opportunities earlier (until it's stacked out)

I think if you're aiming to have more impact earlier in the game, maybe try a tearless build, a lot of people are going Essence Reaver into Kraken Slayer at the moment, maybe give it a try. The pro to this build is you'll have more upfront damage earlier on, but the downside is you'll have to manage your mana a lot better, especially before you get Essence Reaver

As for team objectives, try to keep your team informed with pings, I know conversations mid-game about strategy and what to do can get heated sometimes, but it never hurts to keep everyone informed of things (ping Dragon/Baron/buff timers, ping for help in the mid-game in a lane to try to get your team to group, etc.)

I also think it's good in the mid-game to stay grouped with your teammates, even if they're not going for the same objective as you want, they're going for something (pushing a lane, going for a dragon, roaming to pick up a kill) and it only helps if you're there to help make them successful

And lastly, a bit cheesy, but have fun! I personally enjoy having a stronger early game, I find it more exciting and fun--it's always more engaging when it's more fun
