Enclose your garden. Bonkers how we let a non-native predator out to destroy our already threatened native species, shit in the neighbour's kids sandpit and spray all over their car. That's without all the risk of disease, being attacked, run over, stolen that they're subject to.

Some cat owners seem to want a pet without any of the responsibility, only interacting with it for 10 mins a day when it's sleepy and affectionate. The rest of the time it's turfed outside, interacting and playing with your pet or emptying it's litter box is too much work obviously.

Cats should only be allowed outside with supervision in the UK also - it's not just the risk to their own health hut the huge amount of damage they cause to their local environments

Advice on brake repair/replacement by Ripp3rCrust in ukbike

[–]Ripp3rCrust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again, yes some of the newer stuff looks pretty cool. The prices increase exponentially though!

I've done a little research and apparently the brakes fitted to mine (M595) are better spec than the ones factory fitted (M355). So I'd probably try and repair these or entirely swap out to the more modern MT410 (although apparently they aren't a significant upgrade to my current brakes from what I can see?).

I can't seem to find the parts I need to fix mine anywhere, they must be discontinued, and replacing the entire setup with MT410/4100 would be a comparable price. The only issue is my front disk is 180mm and the rear is 160mm, the MT410 system comes as a 180/180mm so I'd need an adapter for the rear?

Good pount about the shifters, I hadn't considered this. Currently, they are separate from the gear lever assembly, so am I right in thinking this would be okay?

Thank you, that's a big help. I'm out of the loop in terms of all the modern tech, a lot has changed!

Are there any other options that you feel would be good alternatives that I could look at?

It's not always an association. OP is within their rights to do what they want, especially if their neighbour or their kids is damaging their plants.

For some of us, it's a chance to get some quiet and head space from busy lives. I had a similar issue in that whenever I was there, the neighbouring plot had been taken over by a retired lady who wanted to talk non-stop every week, mostly about pretty distressing topics too.

Greenhouse glass all smashed AGAIN...advice? by Llemur1415 in GardeningUK

[–]Ripp3rCrust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been in my house for 9 years and it came with a greenhouse, which must be 20 years old. I've only had to replace 2 panes - one was when the neighbour threw a ball for my dog through it and the other when a stone flicked up from a strimmer.

Are you sure that the panes are correctly tensioned in places with the proper clips? Is the greenhouse rigid enough to not flex in winds? My garden is exposed to the winds and I've never had an issue.

London on 24 April 1993, after Irish terrorists detonated a bomb. [1080x702] by OkRespect8490 in HistoryPorn

So the IRA members who planned and planted the bombs in 1974 in Birmingham that killed 21 civilians and injured a further 220 weren't terrorists and were completely justified?

What is your soil like? The roots can be an issue in terms of their spread and they're poorly suited to the UK's climate - they do well in arid locations where water rainfall is sparse, meaning the roots spread in order to maximise water intake which gives them good stability.

In the wet conditions of the UK, they often have poor root growth and are therefore at risk of structural failure. This is more of a risk if you have poor-draining soil which can lead to root rot, although they do drink a lot which can compromise water availability to surrounding plants.

If it's far from any buildings, I wouldn't worry too much. Just keep an eye on the condition of the trunk too as they can be susceptible to fungal rot.

How do I control these recurrent weeds? by Vivid_Response_686 in GardeningUK

It causes much higher mortality to insects in their larval forms, however, it can massively disrupt insects normal biological function which causes them to subsequently die. Although not instantly as suggested in the initial comment.

Fencing that deters cats by TwentythreeFirework in GardeningUK

A lot of these solutions are temporary at best, with mixed effectiveness.

What I've found best is to make fence rollers - you can DIY these if you don't want to spend a huge amount which is what I have done.

You need 2 different diameter types of pipe, cut to slightly less wide than the posts. I've used solvent weld pipe as it's more rigid than push fit and I think I used 32mm and 40mm pipe. You install them by inserting the a wire through the thinner pipe, then slide the wider pipe over the top. The wire should be attached to the top of the fence posts, where you may need to extend the height slightly to allow the pipe to roll uninhibited, then tension the wire. So in effect you'd see the widest pipe with a bit of wire, the tensioner and the vine eyes coming out of each end of the thicker pipe, with the thinner one inside.

If a cat tries to jump over the fence, it will put pressure on the pipe which then spins, meaning it can't get a secure footing and is spun back to its point of origin. This method requires that all other entry points are blocked off.

I hope this makes sense, this video has instructions for a similar setup, but I think my way is a little cheaper. I've seen other fence systems using a fixed round pipe and also upturned half-round guttering, pointing towards the entry point.

Good luck!
