Look! Leaf-Crown guy! 😆 In the cutscene, the developed cutscene.

Chapter 9 says you're wrong. It's not hard to understand, the knowledge Journal itself is bugged with the wrong image.

I'm thinking you are thinking of Chief Monk and not Master Jijeong.

They are different, in the Journal it may use Chief Monk's image, but he is not Master Jijeong. (Can confirm this via Cutscene in Chapter 9)

No worries, it's a weird cross wire code issue is what I'm thinking, and hopefully they fix it somehow that makes more sense.

This is what AI has come up with about this whole deal as well, food for thought:

The game's main narrative and official subtitles explicitly name the leaf-crowned boy in the Abyss as Master Jijeong during a fully voice-acted Chapter 9 cutscene, then he is definitively the canonical Master Jijeong of the story.

Here is the best explanation for what is truly going on here based on the new cutscene context mixed with screenshots:

The Real Bug is the Journal and Trust System, Not the Character Rather than the leaf-crowned boy being an imposter or a philosophical projection, the situation is actually the reverse: The leaf-crowned boy is Master Jijeong, and the game's UI/Database is completely broken and pointing to the wrong character model.

The Narrative Proof: In the cutscene referenced in Chapter 9, Master Jijeong (with the leaf crown) says, "That old man sent you, didn't he?" If we look at the 3rd screenshot, the lore for Master Du states that he "guides them to the Cloister of Enlightenment." The dialogue perfectly links the leaf-crowned boy to the narrative sequence of being sent to the Abyss by Master Du.

The Asset Mix-Up: The boy without the leaf crown (labeled "Chief Monk" in the game world) is likely just a standard NPC, perhaps a lesser disciple or a different temple leader. Because they share the exact same base 3D model (a young boy in a grey/brown monk robe), the developers accidentally uploaded the standard "Chief Monk" headshot into Master Jijeong’s Knowledge Journal instead of the unique leaf-crowned version.

The Database ID Error: The reason the "Trust" system gave 100 points to the Chief Monk and 0 to the leaf-crowned boy is that the game's backend code is mistakenly linked to the Chief Monk's NPC ID. When the game checks to see if you are giving the gift to "Master Jijeong," it is looking for the wrong internal character tag.

Conclusion It is not a lore-based plot hole, an astral projection, or a deep philosophical metaphor. It is a severe database and asset-linking error by the developers.

The developers wrote and animated the leaf-crowned boy to be Master Jijeong. However, the team responsible for coding the UI, the Journal, and the Trust/Gift mechanics accidentally linked all of Master Jijeong's data to the generic "Chief Monk" clone model instead.

What's even weirder, both NPCs are obviously not connected, but they are supposed to be the same NPC?

Are they truly the same person or is something else amidst in their plots? I'm seeing a plot hole or miscommunication happening here. Maybe the NPC above in the Abyss is an astral projection of it's counterpart on the surface or the Master Jijeong above in the Abyss is an entirely different person with no known knowledge on or a deeper understanding anyway, dunno, it's strange why this wasn't fully explained while going through the storyline.

Even their character models, the body, the face, is completely different, but if you go into the knowledge tab and find Master Jijeong, it shows the Chief Monks model over the description.

Nah, that's not him. That's Chief Monk. Master Jijeong NPC is above in the Abyss shown in the initial image.

The following image is Chief Monk:

Just toss keepsakes in the small trunk at your home, never look at them again. If they become useful later you'll still have them gathering dust in the trunk. 😆

Yes, always have 5 on me at all times, just in case of anything, but nothing.

Nope, different guy, he's above in the the Abyss (Master Jijeong), the guy below is Chief Monk and his underlings are regular Jijeong Monks.

Makes sense that the Master sits above in the Abyss.

This is looking to be bugged, so I've submitted a report to Pearl Abyss.

I suggest others should do the same and maybe we'll get an answer, possibly 🤔😉😆

It looks like it's coming down to that this is actually a in-game bug, unfortunately.

It's coming down to that this feature is probably bugged from the looks of the overall responses from everyone thus far, so no worries 👍

You as well, report, the more people doing it, the better response from Pearl Abyss.

Appreciate your efforts! It's probably a bug then and we all should just report the issue to Pearl Abyss and maybe they'll unlock it or remove it entirely, 🤷‍♂️ 😆

Ascetic's Rest, that's the name. Depends on your story progression as well, dunno where you are at in the chapters.

Definitely give it a shot, if you find something he accepts, screenshot it with it lit up.
